Reckless driving puts lives at risk… Recent incidents on Malta’s roads are a reminder that motorists should remain vigilant and report dangerous behaviour when something is not right.

Footage shared responsibly with the authorities has helped police identify and take action in serious cases, including the recent reckless driving incident involving two Polish tourists, as well as the case of a dangerous truck driver a few years back.

Where it is safe and lawful to do so, discreet dashcam can support The Malta Police Force investigations… and above all lead to safer roads.

Imagine how much easier it would be if we had a digital system that would allow your licence status to be updated in real time... this would reduce the administrative burden, while providing a more reliable picture of whether a vehicle’s annual circulation licence is valid, whether motor insurance is active, whether a vehicle has been reported stolen and whether other regulatory obligations have been met.

One of the clearest advantages of digital annual circulation licences is improved accuracy and data integrity, writes Adrian Galea

Standards should not be voluntary… The Insurance Association Malta welcomes the important role the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) has in being an active contributor to the vehicle safety standards.

The authority’s role is to verify that the vehicle placed on the local market meets the agreed safety and environmental standards, and once it does, the approval will be recognised in all 27 member states and in many countries beyond Europe.

The Insurance Association remarks that it is equally important for vehicles to retain their safety credentials on an on-going basis, especially after they undergo repairs following a collision.

The Association has been vocal about quality vehicle repairs and still awaits an updated version of the local vehicle repair standards (SM 1400.2013), which acknowledges the current reality through increased usage of electric vehicles.

Furthermore, IAM, as the body representing insurance companies in Malta, is calling for these standards to be made mandatory and not left to voluntary compliance.

We believe such a move would strengthen public confidence as local and European authorities push for increased EV usage, while better safeguarding consumer interests.

We need to be ready for extreme weather events... Our president Catherine Calleja warned that with climate change and more extreme weather, there will be even greater damage caused by proximity to the sea and flooding.

According to the association’s data on Storm Harry, most damages were caused by flooding and other water damage. In total, water damage amounted to a third of all claims, but two-thirds of the total cost.

During her interview with The Times, Ms Calleja She said insurers had become key stakeholders in the issue of climate change resilience, with several industry players undergoing training on the subject.

“The role of the insurance industry is to keep the economy going and to allow people to take entrepreneurial risk and not lose everything in a storm,” Ms Calleja said.

Working with the Climate Action Authority to support Malta’s climate transition…

As Malta advances its climate transition, it is essential that insurance industry expertise helps shape the standards, planning and risk frameworks that underpin it.

Following the Insurance Association Malta’s recent meeting with the Climate Action Authority, we are encouraged to be recognised as key stakeholders and look forward to continuing to build on this constructive relationship.

The insurance market will be absorbing much of the climate-related risks. As institutional investors we can also deploy capital to support long-term sustainable development. The market is committed to constructively contributing to policy development on climate mitigation and adaptation.

From an insurance and risk perspective, climate adaptation requires a geographic understanding of Malta’s vulnerability and a coordinated response across government.

IAM can bring practical insight across key adaptation areas, including climate-resilient buildings and related fire and electrical safety standards, the electric vehicle ecosystem, and generally the importance of integrating insurance risk knowledge into public policy.

Through close collaboration between government, regulators and industry, Malta can ensure its climate adaptation efforts result in keeping risks insurable, affordable and financeable so that society, the economy and public finances remain resilient as climate hazards intensify.

The meeting was attended by (from left)... Charles Zarb, IAM; Etienne Sciberras, IAM vice president; Catherine Calleja IAM president; Abigail Cutajar, Climate Action Authority CEO; and Margaret Cassar and David Muscat from the Authority.

Safer roads start with stronger enforcement... The Insurance Association Malta welcomes Parliament’s recent approval of random roadside drink and drug testing. The authorities need the right tools to strengthen enforcement, improve road safety and deter reckless behaviour.

Road safety is everyone’s responsibility: respect, patience and observance of the rules save lives. We can all do our bit by choosing a designated driver or alternative transport to keep alcohol and drugs off our roads.

Minor Crash? Use the bumper-to-bumper form and keep the traffic moving… The Insurance Association Malta is urging motorists to keep a bumper-to-bumper form handy in their cars to minimise congestion on the roads and ease pressure on LESA officials, who responded to 13,191 call-outs last year.

With limited human resources, and an increasingly gridlocked road network, especially during peak times, it is essential that LESA officials are called only when necessary

Abusive practices, such calling out LESA officials for a bumper-to-bumper incident, do happen, further compounding the pressures on stretched resources when they may be needed elsewhere.

IAM and its member Insurance Companies provide bumper-to-bumper forms for free to the public. Motorists are encouraged to keep a copy in their vehicle, together with their insurance certificate and logbook. The Association also recommends taking photos when compiling these forms to ensure accurate documentation.
