Our CCAHD Chair and General Secretary Gianna Minton are on the ground at the International Whaling Commission ( ) Biennial Meeting, following important decisions on cetacean conservation and connecting with partners from Africa and beyond who can help advance the conservation of Atlantic humpback dolphins.

The Atlantic humpback dolphin is critically endangered, with fewer than 3,000 individuals remaining, making it one of the most imperiled cetaceans in the world.

𝐂𝐂𝐀𝐇𝐃 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞!

The CCAHD participated in the launch of a new crew-based observer programme to help address knowledge gaps for Atlantic humpback dolphins and other marine megafauna species on the west coast of Africa.

This exciting new project, hosted by Boskalis and their subsidiary Lamnalco, will allow CCAHD experts to train vessel crews and port service staff who regularly operate in core Atlantic humpback dolphin habitat on how to document dolphin and other marine megafauna observations.

Sightings data will be shared with CCAHD partners in 6 countries on the west coast of Africa where Boskalis is currently active so it can inform conservation action on the ground, where it matters. The project will also increase awareness among crews and management on how to minimise the impact of their operations on coastal marine wildlife.

𝐀𝐭𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐝𝐨𝐥𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚 𝐋𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞!

CCAHD partners, recently documented a sighting of at least 6 Atlantic humpback dolphins in the Sherbro Estuary, where the team was working with local communities to consolidate and expand a citizen science reporting network.

Although initially focused on the Timneh Parrot, the citizen science reporting scheme, involving 30 trained community focal points, will soon expand to include Atlantic humpback dolphins.

We hope that this will yield more reports, and lay the groundwork for more systematic research to document the population in this region, which was only documented for the first time in 2024.

𝐊𝐞𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐓𝐨𝐠𝐨!

As part of its coastal protection project in , Boskalis used CCAHD educational resources, including the Keita and the Dolphins children's book and accompanying classroom resources to raise awareness about vulnerable species.

The book helps children understand the connection between their communities, the coastline, and the marine life that depends on it. The illustrations, which reflect familiar local surroundings, help bring that message to life. The donation of the book to this class in Togo will ensure that messages about biodiversity and coastal awareness can be shared in an accessible way.

The project is part of the Program, supporting coastal communities in Togo facing erosion and climate change, and also reflects a broader collaboration between Boskalis and CCAHD to promote environmental awareness and community engagement in countries that are home to the Critically Endangered Atlantic humpback dolphin.

This Critically Endangered species is one of the world's most threatened and least understood marine mammals.

Today, we are celebrating this species and our network of over 120 dedicated partners. We are celebrating achievements such as the discovery of a previously undocumented dolphin population in Cameroon, groundbreaking research in Senegal's Saloum Delta, and the distribution of educational materials like "Keita and the Dolphins" across range countries. These successes are a testament to the power of collaboration between scientists, governments, NGOs, and local communities.

However, the Atlantic Humpback Dolphin is not safe yet. It still faces severe threats from bycatch in gillnet fisheries, habitat degradation, and expanding maritime activity. Fundraising also remains a significant challenge to scaling up vital work.
