Johnston Applied Marine Sciences

Johnston Applied Marine Sciences We support the conservation and management of marine ecosystems with applied science Science is the foundation of all our work.

JAMS is an independent marine research and consulting company based in Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Our mission is to support the conservation and sustainable management of coral reefs and other marine ecosystems. We conduct independent applied research and provide scientific support services to government agencies and NGOs. Through public-private partnership, we hope to o

ptimize the use of limited resources to maximize benefits to coral reefs, associated ecosystems, and the communities that rely on them. Our activities largely fall under three general categories: research, conservation, and restoration. We use scientific principles to develop innovative tools, technologies, and methodologies that ultimately inform robust and sustainable conservation and restoration strategies.

If you build it, they will come! 🪸🐠✨

Our ocean nursery tables have become their own thriving ecosystems, demonstrating the importance of healthy coral reefs as habitats for many species of fish and other critters! 🐡🦀🐚

Did you know that around 25% of all marine species rely on coral reefs at some point in their lives? 🌏

How many different kinds of fish do you see in this one shot?? 👀

Last week, we were able to check on some of our settlement substrates outplanted last year at our Quartermaster restoration site and were very happy to see many healthy, growing juvenile corals! 🪸

These baby corals were produced from spawn in 2023 (Acropora aff. tenuis) and 2025 (Acropora muricata) and settled on our ridged dome substrates before outplanting. 🤿🐠

Earlier this month, we hosted our first Coral Restoration Workshop with participants from MINA’s Tasi Watch Ranger Program, CNMI Coral Reef Initiative, and Pacific
Coastal Research and Planning! 🌱🌊

Over four days, participants gained training and hands-on experience in coral husbandry, fragmenting and measuring, laboratory procedures, knot-tying and structure building, as well as in-water nursery maintenance, monitoring, and outplanting methods. They learned the why and how behind the work required to support and restore healthy coral reefs. We’re grateful to everyone who came ready to learn, share, and contribute to reef conservation in the CNMI.

Thank you to our participants, partners, and team for making the workshop a success. More outreach coming soon! 🪸📖⛑️🔬

How it started → How it’s growing 🪸📈

Last year, we successfully collected and fertilized gametes of the brain coral Leptoria phrygia for the first time in the Northern Mariana Islands! A subset of the resulting baby corals are currently thriving in our aquariums, where they are growing (and glowing) like crazy!

On Saturday, April 26th, we hosted our 2nd Coral Restoration Seminar in collaboration with at the JAMS Coral Nursery! 🙌

Students got hands-on experience in boating safety practices, swimming safety, coral nursery management, and the science behind reef restoration. Through snorkeling and guided activities, they saw firsthand what it takes to protect and restore our coral ecosystems. 🐠🌱

Si yu’us ma’åse’ yan ghilisow tumwogh to all our amazing participants, the dedicated Tasi to Table team, and our partners who helped make this day a success! Special thanks to the – Marine Patrol Section for keeping our team safe and supported throughout the event.
