🌏 What does it take to turn AI innovation into greener, more resilient cities?

At AI for Nature 2026 in Hong Kong hosted by WWF Hong Kong, UNU Macau Research Fellow Dr. Farhan Latif joined the conversation as moderator of the Smart City session and panellist on Government, Data Governance and Public Services.

Across both discussions, Dr. Latif explored how AI can support more sustainable urban systems, while highlighting the need for proportionate governance and stronger technical and institutional interoperability to turn these possibilities into meaningful sustainability outcomes.

These exchanges connect UNU Macau’s research on responsible AI governance with a wider regional dialogue on how AI can contribute to sustainable development across the Greater Bay Area and beyond.

“We may be the last generation able to set the terms on which humanity and machines coexist.”

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has repeatedly urged world leaders, technology companies and others to work together to ensure the safe use of Artificial Intelligence.

“If AI is to be powerful, it must be governed.
If AI is to be trusted, those who build it must be accountable.
If AI is to be global, it must be fair.
And if AI is to serve the future, it must not consume the future.”

A new UNU-WIDER brief presents the research behind Edward Miguel’s forthcoming WIDER Annual Lecture.

Among the findings:

🌡️ A year averaging 30°C is expected to produce approximately 4 percentage points slower growth in African countries than a year averaging 19°C
⚠️ In the poorest African nations, each additional degree of warming increases the likelihood of civil conflict by 10 percentage points
📈 Increasing annual per capita income growth by even 1% could largely undo the projected adverse effects of global warming
