Last week, the once clear sky suddenly turned pale as extreme weather shattered the tranquility of the rehabilitation center. For a full hour, dense hailstones pelted down like pebbles.

With a deafening roar, the awning at the entrance was riddled with holes. Then, a fierce storm caused a power outage throughout the facility. After the storm, carefully cultivated plants were all knocked askew; worse still, the main road leading to the rehabilitation center was completely blocked by a large, uprooted tree, cutting off all access.

The next day, maintenance personnel quickly restored power and cleared the broken tree and branches from the road. We sincerely thank all the volunteers and rescue workers for their concerted efforts, which allowed the rehabilitation center to be restored to its original state.

The school successfully held the opening ceremonies for two exhibitions celebrating its 70th anniversary. The exhibitions, "Smart Teaching and Technology Education Achievements Exhibition" and "Liberal Arts Convergence, Starting from the Heart: 70th Anniversary Student Artwork Exhibition," showcased the outstanding achievements of teachers and students from all departments (kindergarten, primary, and secondary) in science, technology, and art. The exhibitions demonstrated the school's rich achievements in promoting holistic education and cultivating humanities and innovation, bringing a successful conclusion to the series of 70th anniversary celebrations.

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the school, the school held the opening ceremonies for the "Smart Teaching and Technology Education Achievements Exhibition" and "Liberal Arts Convergence, Starting from the Heart: 70th Anniversary Student Artwork Exhibition" on the afternoon of April 30th at the Zizhan Gallery of the Education Resource Centre of the Education and Youth Development Bureau. The opening ceremony was officiated by numerous distinguished figures from the education sector and society, including Mr. Wong Tat-choi, Director of the Education and Youth Development Bureau; Mr. Zhang Chuanwei, Level 4 Researcher of the Education and Youth Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR; Father Fu Nandou, Director of the Jesuit Order in Macao; Mr. Zheng Hongguang, President of the Macao Chinese Education Association; Mr. Zhou Bohui, President of the Macao Catholic Schools Association; Ms. Xiang Mei, Chairperson of the Macao Public Service Education Association; Mr. Wu Zhihui, Honorary President of the Ricci Secondary School Alumni Association; Ms. Fang Aijuan, Secretary of the Ricci Secondary School Alumni Association; and Ms. Zhang Huiling, Principal of Ricci Secondary School. Also present were Father Chen Junwei, Chaplain of Hai Xing Secondary School; Principal Huang Biao and Vice Principal Yu Siwei; Mr. Huang Guoliang, Director of the Office of the Diocese Youth Committee; Mr. Liao Guozhong, Director of the Diocese Social Communication Center; Ms. Zhong Kaiqi, Curatorial Assistant of the Diocese Historical Archives and Cultural Relics Department; Mr. Huang Qiyao, Director of the Cardinal Newman Art Gallery; Father Xu Liren, Assistant Supervisor of Ricci Secondary School; and Father Park Jung-hwan, among many other guests, making it a grand occasion.

At the beginning of the ceremony, Chaplain Park Jung-hwan led a prayer, infusing the exhibition with gratitude and blessings. Following this, Principal Zhang Huiling delivered a welcome speech, noting that the 70th anniversary celebrations were drawing to a close and expressing heartfelt gratitude to the Education and Youth Development Bureau for lending the venue and to all parties for their support. At the opening ceremony, in addition to students performing handmade electronic instruments that could simulate the sounds of various instruments, the coloring book "I Remember—The Footprints of Father Ming's Love" was also launched. This coloring book, created by student Ouyang Zhiyu, uses old photos and alumni recounts to depict Father Ming's simple yet warm acts of love through her drawings. A ribbon-cutting ceremony followed, and a group photo was taken in a lively atmosphere. After the ceremony, students led the guests to visit the art exhibition and the smart technology achievements exhibition; the students' sincere and engaging explanations were praised by the guests.

In her speech, Principal Zhang Huiling emphasized the "foundation of love" and the spirit of "I am for everyone, walking with you," and shared her joy at receiving a congratulatory letter from Father Susa, the Superior General of the Jesuits. The principal conveyed the president's concern, pointing out that contemporary youth face challenges such as geopolitics, technological advancements, and emotional well-being. She cautioned that a society solely pursuing competition and excellence could easily cultivate "success-oriented individualists" lacking compassion. She encouraged teachers and students to cherish humanistic values in this rapidly evolving technological era, integrating compassion into technological applications. She urged students to be authentic, let their lives shine, and use their knowledge to serve society, bringing greater benefits to Macau, the nation, and the world, embodying the spirit of "Magis" (more). She also mentioned Father Ming's inspirational coloring book, conveying the message of carrying on the school's original mission.

Since its founding in 1955, Matteo Ricci Secondary School has upheld its motto of "Friendship and Diligence" and the Jesuit educational tradition, striving to cultivate well-rounded young people with universal compassion. This themed educational exhibition for its 70th anniversary echoes Father Matteo Ricci's spirit of blending Eastern and Western cultures and demonstrates the school's determination to find a balance between technology and the humanities, and to lead educational innovation with love and care. Looking to the future, the school will continue to cultivate holistic education, accompanying students to live lives of depth and breadth in a rapidly changing world, glorifying God and serving humanity through action, thus further glorifying the Lord.

Books Nourish Children's Hearts, Greenery Accompanies Growth: The Greenway Seed Library Two-Day Event Concludes Successfully As World Earth Day on April 22nd and World Book Day on April 23rd beautifully coincided, the event concluded successfully amidst warmth and laughter. Over these two days, teachers and students, using books as friends and seeds as a medium, joined hands with kindergarten students from K1 to K3, and primary school students from grades 1 and 2, to stroll together in a beautiful world where nature and books blend seamlessly. Through the pages of books, teachers and students learned about the Earth and perceived all things in nature. In the process of sowing seeds by hand, they protected the ecosystem, nurtured hope, and captured countless warm and healing moments of growth.

After borrowing books, students selected their own tiny seeds, carefully received their personalized planting cards, and gently took this precious "gift of life" home to begin their nurturing journey. They touched the soft soil with their own hands, carefully watered the tender new shoots, and truly felt the power of life's budding and vigorous growth. Each tiny seed, not only taking root in the soil, quietly plants seeds of environmental awareness and responsibility in the hearts of every child.

Books broaden horizons, seeds nurture hope; the fragrance of books nourishes children's hearts, greenery accompanies growth. This unforgettable time, filled with the scent of ink and the breath of nature, will surely become a precious, gentle yet powerful memory in every child's childhood. May every child continue to cherish their passion, maintain their love for reading, their reverence for nature, and their enthusiasm for life; may the habit of reading always be with them, and may their love for protecting the environment never cease, growing vibrant and strong under the nourishment of books and the companionship of nature!

Under the warm sun, volunteers pumped air into wheelchairs, adjusting the tires and armrests; rehabilitation patients helped support the vehicle. As the tires gradually filled, the wheels turned again. What was repaired was not just a wheelchair for mobility, but also the power to start anew.

06/05/2026

Macau's First Light team achieves 10th place globally in the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) UNEARTHED Robotics competition held in Houston, USA, from April 29th to May 2nd. This achievement is the best result ever for the Macau team and not only demonstrates the school's outstanding achievements in science and technology education but also embodies the Jesuit educational philosophy of "More"—the pursuit of excellence—which aligns perfectly with the annual theme "Live Your True Self, Shine Brightly."

This year's competition, themed "UNEARTHED," emphasized the use of technology to protect cultural heritage. Following the Macau regional finals, the team members, after receiving professional advice from Mr. Du Zhihao of the Macau History Education Association and Dr. Qiu Zhu, Honorary President of the Macau Internet and Data Security Association and a cybersecurity expert, continuously tested the feasibility of the hardware, optimized the AI model and Lego components, and ultimately iterated and improved their innovative project. Regarding the robotics tasks, the team also improved the robotic task components and programs, conducting numerous debugging and practice sessions to increase the success rate.

During the competition in the United States, the team actively prepared for the event. To prepare for the robot task training, the participating team set off at 5 a.m. to the competition venue to queue for robot task training. In the robot task competition, the team achieved a perfect score in the first round and ranked first in the world. Unfortunately, the results in the second and third rounds were not as ideal. In the end, the average score of the three rounds ranked tenth in the world, surpassing the ranking of eleventh in the practice round. This competition required the presentation of the innovative project and robot task in English. All team members participated in the presentation and answering questions. During the journey, the team practiced the presentation whenever they had free time. In the end, all members successfully presented in English and received positive affirmation from the judges. The Magis team excelled in innovation projects and robotics tasks, embodying the Magis spirit of continuous improvement and the pursuit of excellence.

During the competition, team members actively exchanged technical insights and cultural experiences with competitors from the United States, Japan, Italy, Canada, and other countries, exchanging team badges and demonstrating an international perspective of "cooperative competition." Their open attitude fostered friendships with competitors from around the world, allowing Macao's educational achievements to shine on the international stage.

The Macao Science Museum also sent staff to the United States to accompany the teachers and students, providing guidance and support throughout the process, and was pleased to see the team ultimately demonstrate and showcase their solid technical capabilities. Mr. Shao Hanbin, Director of the Macao Science Museum, congratulated the school in a message: "Congratulations to Rimador Secondary School on their outstanding achievement in their first LEGO World Championship. The remarkable results of your school's STEM education in recent years are evident to all. Reaching the top ten in the world is no easy feat." Director Shao further stated, "The Science Museum will continue to leverage its role as a platform for science education and provide excellent services to schools, promoting the integrated development of science education talent." In addition to participating in the exciting competition, teachers and students also seized the rare opportunity to visit NASA's Space Center in Houston, observing rockets and space shuttles up close and experiencing firsthand the training process of astronauts. They also visited the Houston Museum of Natural History, where they witnessed enormous dinosaur fossils and rare ancient animal remains in the paleontology exhibit, and admired insects and butterflies from around the world in the butterfly house.

The trip was expensive, but they were fortunate to receive enthusiastic help and support from teachers, students, parents, alumni, and retired faculty. They also received English language training sponsored by Introductory Education, and team members, parents, and teachers held fundraising events on campus to raise some of the funds themselves. Every moment of the trip was unforgettable for the participating students. They felt that being able to learn, compete, and exchange ideas with world-class teams was the greatest gain. This opportunity to broaden their horizons embodies the "whole person" quality cultivated by Jesuit education—not only pursuing academic achievements but also valuing personal growth and the realization of life's value.

The team name, "Dawn's Light," symbolizes hope and new life. Through innovative projects in cultural heritage preservation, the students demonstrated social responsibility and a spirit of service, applying their knowledge to societal needs and discovering their own potential in the process, living a vibrant and fulfilling life.

Participating Students: Xiao Jiaheng (Science 1A), Wu Siyan (Science 1B), Li Tianyou (Science 1B), Zheng Wenlang (Science 1B), Cao Jingheng (Grade 8E), Lü Xueying (Grade 8F), Chen Zhiyan (Grade 8F)

"Greenway Gate" Explores the Dual Faces of Urban Greenery: Cultivating Observers Who Love Our Earth Home

Recently, our school conducted a physical geography teaching activity themed "Greenway Gate—The Dual Faces of Urban Greenery," guiding Grade 11 science students to step out of the classroom, get closer to nature, and start by observing and identifying the vegetation around them. This encouraged them to reflect on the relationship between humans and the environment, thereby cultivating their awareness and action to protect our Earth home.

The activity focused on the identification and exploration of "artificial vegetation and natural vegetation." Students first learned the definitions and differences between the two in class, and then discussed this in the context of Macau's local landscape, where evergreen broad-leaved forests are the native vegetation, while a large number of artificially cultivated and introduced tree species also exist. Following this, students were divided into groups for image feature identification training and completed group discussions to deepen their understanding.

To promote practical application, the course included a field research component. Students pre-installed the nature observation application iNaturalist and conducted plant observations on campus, completing individual observation worksheets. The task guided students to carefully compare the differences between cultivated and wild plants in spatial distribution and growth patterns, reflecting on the underlying survival strategies and adaptability.

The activity concluded with a case study of Dovecote Park, allowing students to offer insights into the survival challenges faced by wild plants and attempt to design optimization solutions that balance historical landscape protection, biodiversity conservation, and visitor experience. Through the complete process of "observation-analysis-proposal," students not only learned ecological knowledge but also put into practice their initial thinking on environmental care and sustainable development.

The "Greenway Gate" activity symbolizes a gateway to green awareness and action. We hope that students will broaden their horizons and become more conscious and proactive environmental guardians amidst the city's dual green spaces.
