Chapter I: The thread
May 16-17, 2026

Just 450 km from us — close enough for a weekend, far enough to feel like a different world.

We are invited by the local culture bureau to trace the cultural roots of the people whose sense of family built dynasties across the world.

This is where the "Jews of China" —

Li Ka-shing (Hong Kong)

Ma Huateng (Pony Ma) (Shenzhen)
Founder of Tencent (QQ, WeChat).

And countless other titans across the world who share the same root —
learned their first lesson:

Family comes first. Second. Always.

And then there is the wisdom that flowed here for two thousand years.
Confucius — not as dusty text, but as living currents.

A belief that learning shapes character, character shapes destiny, and a cultivated mind can move mountains.

That current never stopped.

---A Note on "Nuo"

In Xiangxi, we encountered “Nuo“— an ancient ritual where masks are not decorations but vessels. When a dancer puts on a Nuo mask, he no longer performs. He becomes the spirit: protector, judge, or trickster. The mask reveals a truth beneath the human face.

Nuo teaches that a mask can hide — but it can also expose. Some wear kindness like a borrowed garment, easily shed when convenience calls. Some mistake status for substance, forgetting that true worth is never worn on the outside. And some — the rarest — wear no mask at all, offering help without calculation, standing by without expecting return, reminding us that grace still walks among us.

A Chinese writer once said a honeymoon should come before marriage — because it is not comfort but shared struggle that reveals who truly walks beside you.

Some bonds you thought unbreakable might show unexpected cracks. Others, born from nowhere, might hold you steady when you need it most. This kind of goodness has no explanation. It simply exists.

When the dust settles, you find the gold.

Apr 3-5: Mysterious Xiangxi—Part I

This massive land sits amid the towering mountains where Hubei, Chongqing, Guizhou and Guangxi meet. Before liberation, its remote terrain and weak governance allowed banditry to run rampant, making it a typical “bandit area.” At the same time, Xiangxi is home to ethnic groups such as the D**g, Tujia and Miao, and has given rise to distinctive stilted wooden houses, corpse-mending (or corpse-transport) legends, traditional ethnic costumes, and other characteristic folk customs — a richly rooted corridor of ethnic culture.

Our sincere gratitude to everyone for the joint effort of flipping this chapter.
