Oct 31 – Nov 2 ｜A City on the Sea, A Clan in the Mountains

A cultural study program with the Fujian Provincial Culture department

🏝️ Gulangyu — “Piano Island,” “Cat Island”
China’s only island UNESCO World Heritage Site. No cars. Over a thousand historic buildings, a living “International Architecture Expo” from a century ago. It has quietly shaped many of modern China’s remarkable lives. China’s only organ museum is here, and music still drifts from old villas.

✈️ An airport about to disappear
Planes skim so low they seem to graze the temple roofs. An old caretaker has watched them for twenty years. By year’s end, that view is gone.

🏘️ The Tulou
Massive earthen fortresses built by Hakka clans centuries ago. A UNESCO World Heritage Site. Each was a self-contained world — a clan’s home, temple, and defence, all under one roof. Last year we saw one famous cluster. This time we complete the story.

🚄 Two ways to travel on water
A metro leaves the tunnel and the ocean fills the window — like the sea train in Spirited Away. A boat carries us to the island with a thousand pianos. One journey, two crossings.


This is just a glimpse — there is more to come.

Sept 12–13 · Study Program: The Soul of Design & Craftsmanship

🏛️ Architecture · Curated Visit
Zaha Hadid's first ever residential project, two towers linked by a suspended sky bridge.

🏺 Ceramics, three ways
Three stories of clay. The special exhibition of Tang Sancai, colours still vivid after a thousand years. Qing imperial porcelain, fired for emperors. And the local clay that has defined this city for centuries—on rooftops, in gardens, on gallery walls.

🔥 Craft
Across town, a dragon kiln that has been firing for five centuries. It's the raw, earthy birthplace of Lingnan ceramics—and a stunning contrast to Zaha's modernism. On weekends, the old ceramic district comes alive—artists open their studios, makers gather, and the neighborhood becomes a living market of clay and creativity.

🌿 Contemporary art, coffee aroma, exotic scenery · Curated Visit

A botanical garden tucked inside a flower market. Spanish olive trees, African baobabs—species you don't expect to see here. Coffee, silence, a slow afternoon among the plants. A space shaped by a remarkable hand, with an architecture tour woven into the experience.

We keep the group small. Only a handful of art enthusiasts.

Beneath the humble veneer of this quiet third-tier city lies the heartbeat of a thousand-year empire.
The Song Dynasty walls still stand tall, and its thousand-year-old city gates are wide enough for ancient war horses to charge through side-by-side.
The floating bridge of wood and boats sways on the river, just as it has for a millennium, and the drainage system still works flawlessly after ten centuries...

The present-day simplicity doesn't erase the past; it just hides the grandeur in plain sight.

Sense: Vision

You never knew you never knew.

One room held 5,000 years of scent. Not just smells — the story of how people chased them across the world. Spices from the East. Resins from the West. Incense that moved along the same road that carried silk, faith, and entire civilisations.

That road had a name.

And then, the next day, a different room. This one held 1,500-year-old faces, carved by hands that believed in something bigger than themselves. Colours that should have faded but didn't. Fragments of a world that once spoke along that same road — where East and West didn't just meet, but talked.

Two rooms, one thread. Scent and stone shared the same path.

We may not fully understand what we were seeing. But we understand that culture doesn't belong to one people or one time. It travels, it changes, it connects. And we are always students of it.

We know we couldn’t do any of this without the right people standing with us.
