📢 ICME is pleased to share this call for papers from our colleagues at ICOM Costume for the 2026 Annual Meeting in Madrid, Museo del Traje:

“Undressing the Institution: Costume, Fashion and Textile Collections, Colonial Histories, New Museologies”

session as part of the conference programme, further strengthening dialogue across our committees.

The meeting invites critical reflections on colonial legacies in museum collections, provenance, classification systems, collaborative interpretation, and new community-centred approaches to collections and exhibitions.

We are always glad to support and highlight initiatives across ICOM International Committees and encourage members interested in decolonisation, material culture, textiles, and community engagement to explore this opportunity.

Museums connect us through culture, heritage and shared stories.

On , UNESCO and ICOM are joining forces to highlight the essential role museums play as places for dialogue, learning and exchange, where people and communities come together across generations and cultures.

Under this year’s theme, “Museums Uniting a Divided World,” we recognise the power of museums to foster understanding, strengthen social cohesion and create opportunities for diverse perspectives to meet.

At a time of rapid technological and social change, museums continue to evolve, embracing new opportunities while remaining places that preserve memory, encourage critical thinking and strengthen connections across communities.

Because museums do more than preserve the past. They help shape more inclusive, informed and connected societies for the future.

An article from our Summer 2026 issue is now available to read online!

In “A History of China in Silk: The Chris Hall Collection at the Hong Kong Palace Museum”, authors Daisy Yiyou Wang, Feng Zhao and Sum Yin Yau present an illuminating survey of China's rich silk heritage. The article highlights the extraordinary promised gift of renowned collector Chris Hall, whose unparalleled collection features nearly 3000 historical textiles spanning from the Warring States period to the 21st century. Through a chronological exploration — from the abstract brocades of the Chu state and the cosmopolitan pearl roundels of the Tang dynasty (618-907) to the exquisite silk tapestries of the Qing court (1644-1911)— the authors detail how silk functioned not merely as a luxury good, but as a vital medium for socio-economic development, artistic innovation and cross-cultural exchange along the Silk Roads.
