In a historic medical breakthrough, Dr. Mashudu Tshifularo from South Africa became the first surgeon to restore hearing using 3D-printed ear b0nes. In 2019, he successfully transplanted titanium versions of the malleus, incus, and stapes — the three tiny bones inside the middle ear — offering new hope to patients with conductive hearing loss. The revolutionary procedure was performed at Steve Biko Academic Hospital and took just two hours to complete.

Not only did this innovation reduce the risk of infection and speed up recovery, but it also marked a major milestone in the use of 3D printing in human surgery. Dr. Tshifularo’s work didn’t stop there — he also pioneered bloodless tonsillectomy techniques using radiofrequency, proving that the future of ENT surgery is being shaped by bold African innovation.
