Apart from providing fellowships, awarded annually and collectively selected by the network.

AFIELD is an international network of cultural changemakers grown from fellowships given to artists and cultural practitioners who have initiated social projects catalyzing change and empowering their communities in long-term and tangible ways. AFIELD also provides other resources in the form of discussions, mutual aid, incubation and community building, to help fellows deepen and strengthen their

work in their particular contexts. Through its active network, AFIELD facilitates mutual support and collaboration across the globe. In the long run, it enables discourse, theory and the development of infrastructures for socially-engaged practice, through an expanding set of examples of practice “in action.”

AFIELD amplifies creative voices and solutions, with the aim to bring arts and culture to the foreground of social experimentation and international philanthropic thinking. 🌱 Meet 2026 TJA Fellow Mihaela Drăgan (.kali).

Mihaela Drăgan is a Bucharest-based q***r Roma artist, director, and playwright working to reclaim narrative authority for marginalized bodies. In 2014, she co-founded 𝘎𝘪𝘶𝘷𝘭𝘪𝘱𝘦𝘯 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘺, Romania's first independent Roma feminist theater company, where she collaborates with, performs, and mentors an emerging generation of Roma artists.

Using joyful performance, dramaturgy, and filmmaking, including Drăgan’s upcoming collaborative documentary 𝘐 𝘖𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘗𝘳𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘚𝘢𝘳𝘢 𝘒𝘢𝘭𝘪 (currently in production), 𝘎𝘪𝘶𝘷𝘭𝘪𝘱𝘦𝘯 confronts centuries of systemic racism, violence, and anti-Roma bias.

By shifting public focus away from victimhood toward collective memory and intergenerational resistance in the Roma community, 𝘎𝘪𝘶𝘷𝘭𝘪𝘱𝘦𝘯 pursues a future in which past violations are not repeated.

🌱 Meet 2026 TJA Fellow François Makanga (.makanga)

François Makanga is a Brussels-based artist, activist, and decolonial mediator specializing in the critical reinterpretation of colonial narratives. Since 2017, he has pioneered theatrical decolonial tours across major institutions, including the Africa Museum, Bozar, Kanal Centre Pompidou, and CIVA, linking historical memory directly to anti-racist advocacy.

He is the founder of 𝘊𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘚𝘱𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦, an initiative that confronts the systemic institutional denial leaving Congolese resistance and the histories of colonized women invisible within Belgium's civic imagination.

Using performance, storytelling, and sharp irony, his guided urban walks and temporary museum labels (𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘴 é𝘱𝘩é𝘮è𝘳𝘦𝘴) subvert Eurocentric histories by injecting missing African commentary.

At a time when international bodies including the UN and the African Union are calling for legal frameworks to address the enduring harms of colonialism, Makanga’s practice provides an urgent artistic counterpart, elevating local memory work into a broader demand for historical and political accountability, and ensuring ongoing injustices are remembered and actively addressed at the grassroots.

🌱 Meet 2026 TJA Fellow Aida Šehović.

Aida Šehović is a Sarajevo-based visual artist using socially engaged art as a mechanism for collective healing, public mourning, and resistance against the normalization of genocide. Forced to flee her hometown as a teenager during the Bosnian War, her lived experience deeply informs her practice and commitment to public memory.

She is the founding director of the Š𝘛𝘖 𝘛𝘌 𝘕𝘌𝘔𝘈 𝘍𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 (.Monument), a participatory memorial responding to the denial of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide, in which more than 8,372 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were systematically killed, and to the wider failure of post-conflict societies to sustain accountability.

Built alongside survivor associations, civil society networks, and diaspora communities, the foundation has created a nomadic monument using the 𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘥ž𝘢𝘯 (a traditional Bosnian coffee cup) to symbolize absence. From 2006 to 2020, the project traveled across 15 cities, accumulating 8,372 donated cups before its final gathering at the Srebrenica Memorial Center.

Today, the foundation continues this truth-telling practice through documentary film, an interactive archive (𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘔𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘦), and educational workshops (𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘓𝘈𝘉).

What does it mean for a line to have "agency"?

To the Indigenous Shipibo-Konibo people of the Amazon, kené (traditional designs painted on ceremonial pottery, body and textiles) map the cosmos. These lines are believed to possess a sacred potency known as soí: a beauty so pure and precise, that the artwork takes on a life of its own.

Peruvian SÖI Collective have just released a new book documenting their collaborative kené production from 2015 to 2017. Co-founded by Wilma Maynas, Silvia Ricopa, Olinda Silvano, and Alejandra Ballón, the collective pioneered Shipibo-Konibo muralism by creating the first four kené murals in Lima, alongside 60 works on paper that now constitute the permanent SÖI Kené Collection.

🌐 Last year, social innovator, creative strategist, and educator Badruun Gardi was nominated to join the AFIELD Network, recognized for his work tackling urgent global crises: translating traditional Mongolian nomadic wisdom into scalable, modern frameworks for climate adaptation and migration.

A Stanford University graduate and a Harvard Graduate School of Design Loeb Fellow, Badruun is the co-founder of 𝘎𝘦𝘳𝘏𝘶𝘣 and 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘕𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘥 𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘵𝘦, a nonprofit research and action center based in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Through programs like the 𝘒𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘮𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘤 𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘓𝘢𝘣 and 𝘚𝘵𝘦𝘱𝘱𝘦 𝘛𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳, the New Nomad Institute brings together urban youth, international students, and field experts, who use Mongolian traditions to shape resilient, systemic solutions to existential threats like the climate crisis and unrestricted AI development.

🎬 Tomorrow, 06 June, Jail Time Records premieres their debut feature documentary at the 𝙏𝙧𝙞𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙖 𝙁𝙞𝙡𝙢 𝙁𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙖𝙡 in New York City.

Directed by Dione Roach and Steve "Vidou H" Happi as a continuation of their 2018 initiative of the same name, the film profiles the first recording studio created inside a prison on the African continent. Over six years in the making, it intimately follows hip-hop artists 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘦, 𝘌𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘳, and 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘳 within the studio in Central Prison of Douala, as they navigate volatile circumstances and channel their struggles and hopes through music.

Alongside this weekend's NYC premiere, Jail Time Records is currently presenting at the Cameroon Pavilion at the 61𝙨𝙩 𝙑𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝘽𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙚. Their installation, 𝘕𝘢𝘺𝘢, is a three-channel video piece featuring dream-like, deeply personal scenes from both inside the prison and imagined environments. On view until 23 November 2026.

🌟 Last month AFIELD Peer & Strategic Board Member Taeyoon Choi () was awarded the 𝙆𝙣𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙁𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝘼𝙧𝙩+𝙏𝙚𝙘𝙝 𝙁𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥: an initiative championing artists who use emerging technologies in thoughtful, radical or poetic ways to push the field forward.

Taeyoon co-founded the 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘗𝘰𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘶𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, guiding its curriculum and community between 2013 and 2020. His recent creative and pedagogical practice centers on making technology accessible and inclusive—a commitment rooted in local communities and sustained by a global network.
