💡 30 years ago, New York City had a bold new idea.
In the face of increasing rainfall in the city, the borough of Staten Island decided to invest in 'bluebelts'. This nature-based solution involves the creation of wetlands and ponds to provide numerous benefits:
💧 Slow the flow of water
🌊 Act as storm barriers
🚰 Filter pollutants
⚠️ Reduce flood risk
🏙️ There are now close to 100 bluebelts in New York City – most of which are located on Staten Island. Momentum is also gaining in other boroughs, with the plan to invest $68 million to build a bluebelt in Brooklyn's Prospect Park – the first in this area.
Beyond environmental benefits and financial savings in avoided losses, NYC's bluebelts are providing free access to nature for residents, improving both physical and mental health. 🌿
