THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY OF BIRD CONSERVATION PARTNERS GATHERS IN NAIROBI, KENYA

This week in Nairobi, Kenya, representatives of BirdLife International’s 125 national Partners from 120 countries have gathered for the Global Partnership Meeting and the Global Flyway Summit.

It was inspiring to learn more about the remarkable contributions in each region the Partners are making to the global biodiversity agenda. Partners are addressing major drivers of biodiversity loss, particularly unsustainable agriculture, while engaging local communities, collaborating with national governments, and supporting the implementation of international environmental agreements, including the C*D, CMS, CITES, and Ramsar Convention, as well as the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Across the Asia region, Partners are working to conserve more than 148 globally threatened species and 161 Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas and Key Biodiversity Areas. This reflects Asia’s critical importance for forests, wetlands, grasslands, and the world’s major migratory flyways. What impressed me most is that this work extends far beyond individual species and sites.

As BirdLife’s national Partner in Mongolia, the Wildlife Science and Conservation Center of Mongolia is proud to be part of this collective effort. Mongolia supports many globally important bird species and habitats, and WSCC is playing an increasingly important regional role in East Asia-Australasian and Central Asian Flyways conservation, scientific research, protected-area management, community engagement, and threatened-species conservation.

🐦 INTERNATIONAL AGEING & SEXING WORKSHOP FOR PASSERINES SUCCESSFULLY HELD AT KHURKH BIRD RINGING STATION

🌍 🎓 From 1–6 September 2026, the international Ageing & Sexing Workshop for Passerines was successfully held at Khurkh Bird Ringing Station - Хурхын шувуу бөгжлөх суурин, in eastern Mongolia, bringing together 22 participants representing 11 countries and regions for six intensive days of field-based learning, practical training, and international knowledge exchange.

🔍 📖The workshop was designed to strengthen practical skills in ageing and s*xing passerines, with a particular focus on moult patterns, plumage generations, biometric measurements, and other criteria used to determine age and s*x in birds in the hand.

👨‍🏫The training was led by experienced bird ringers and trainers Magnus Hellström and Gabriel Norevik from Ottenby Bird Observatory, Sweden. Rather than relying only on classroom theory, participants worked directly with birds throughout the workshop, examining plumage and moult patterns, discussing difficult individuals, comparing different ageing and s*xing criteria, and applying what they learned during daily ringing sessions.

🎯An important part of the training focused on standardisation and data quality. Accurately determining age, s*x, moult stage, and biometric measurements using consistent methods makes ringing data more reliable and comparable across ringers, stations, seasons, and countries.

📸Participants also explored standardised bird photography as a permanent visual record. Photographs of plumage, wings, tails, moult limits, and other key features can later be reviewed, discussed with other ringers, and used as reference material for future training and identification.

🌏 The workshop brought together participants from Mongolia, Sweden, South Korea, Thailand, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Russia, Scotland, England, and Germany, creating a diverse learning environment across different bird-ringing traditions and experiences.

💡Through nine country and regional presentations, participants introduced their bird-ringing programmes, station operations, research and monitoring activities, training systems, challenges, and lessons learned. These exchanges provided an important opportunity to compare approaches, discuss common challenges, learn directly from one another, and strengthen professional connections across the flyway.

🎯WHAT DID WE ACHIEVE?

📈Participants strengthened their practical skills and confidence in passerine ageing, s*xing, and moult assessment, while developing a stronger shared understanding of the importance of standardised methods and high-quality data.

🤝The workshop strengthened connections among ringers and researchers from different countries and created opportunities for future knowledge exchange, training, research, and collaboration across the flyway.

🇲🇳For Mongolia, the workshop also contributes to a longer-term goal: building national bird-ringing capacity and strengthening the skills needed to maintain high-quality, long-term monitoring at Mongolia’s bird-ringing stations.

🪽Migratory birds do not recognize national borders. Understanding their movements and life cycles therefore requires more than the work of a single station or country. It requires skilled people, comparable data, connected ringing stations, and long-term collaboration across the flyway.

🌱The six days at Khurkh were therefore about more than learning how to better age and s*x passerines. They were about improving the quality of our work, investing in people, sharing knowledge, and strengthening the connections that allow bird ringing to contribute more effectively to migration research and conservation.

We ring birds individually, but we understand migration together. 🐦🌏

💐We sincerely thank Magnus Hellström and Gabriel Norevik for generously sharing their expertise and experience, and all participants for their enthusiasm, questions, active participation, and willingness to share their knowledge throughout the workshop.
💚 We gratefully acknowledge BirdLife International Asia for its valuable support for this workshop and its contribution to strengthening bird-ringing skills and capacity in Asia.

🙏We also extend our sincere appreciation to the workshop coordinator, bird ringers, and WSCC staff whose careful preparation, field support, logistics, and teamwork made the six-day training possible.
