⚡🏗️A historic groundbreaking ceremony for a major development project that is expected to make a significant contribution to Mongolia’s national development and the economic independence of the western region has been held in Govi-Altai Province.
As part of this initiative, a 300 MW power plant project—capable of producing 2,160.0 million kWh of electricity annually—has officially commenced construction in Tögrög soum, initiated by AustCham Mongolia's member Макс Групп - Max Group.
Once operational, the power plant will help address the 150–180 MW electricity shortage currently affecting the Altai–Uliastai energy system, while providing a stable and reliable domestic energy source for the region. More broadly, the project represents an important step toward reducing the western region’s dependence on imported electricity in Uvs, Bayan-Ölgii, and Khovd provinces, thereby retaining foreign currency outflows within the domestic economy and strengthening import substitution capacity.
During the construction phase, the project is expected to create over 1,600 temporary jobs, while more than 500 permanent jobs will be generated once the plant becomes fully operational.
