The Gobi Desert is one of the driest regions in Mongolia 🇲🇳, where water scarcity is a defining challenge for both livelihoods and economic development. Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) offers a practical and sustainable pathway to balance mining activities, environmental protection, and community needs.
Strong institutions play a critical role in improving water governance in the Gobi. This includes 🐫 repairing and maintaining wells that are essential for herders’ mobility and resilience, 💧 improving transparency and communication on water availability and permitting processes, and ⚙️ strengthening coordination among environmental, agricultural, and river basin authorities. When institutions work in silos, water management suffers; when they collaborate, sustainability improves.
Equally important are targeted measures to ensure water access is both sustainable and equitable. These include increasing public investment in groundwater research and long-term monitoring, making mining-related water use data openly accessible to build trust and accountability, and 🚰 allocating water fees in ways that directly support local water infrastructure and services.
In an arid region like the Gobi, water is not just a resource, it is a foundation for livelihoods, ecosystems, and responsible development. Applying IWRM principles can help ensure that water management supports both present needs and future generations.

Hydrology: Hydrology explores the distribution, movement, and quality of water within the Earth's atmosphere, surface, and subsurface. Key topics include precipitation, evaporation, runoff, and groundwater flow.
Water Quality: This area involves monitoring and analyzing the chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of water. The goal is to ensure water is safe for human use and to protect aquatic ecosystems.
Water Resources Management: Water resource management promotes the sustainable use and conservation of water for agriculture, industry, municipal supply, and recreation. It addresses issues such as scarcity, allocation, and the development of effective policy.

• Усны нөөцийн менежмент: Усны нөөцийг тогтвортой ашиглах, хамгаалах асуудлыг судлана. Үүнд хөдөө аж ахуй, үйлдвэрлэл, хэрэглээ, амралт чөлөөт цаг зэрэг олон салбарын усны хэрэгцээ, хуваарилалт, бодлогын боловсруулалтыг хамарна.
