Our Story

Myanmar is one of the largest countries in South East Asia with significant population of about 60 million and more importantly, with an interesting history. Although Myanmar (previously known as Burma) had Parliamentary Democracy system after the independence in 1948, the democratic practices in Myanmar had disappeared in 1962 by a military coup. Since that time up to 2010, Myanmar was under the military dictatorship for nearly 50 years. After 2010 General Election, Myanmar is transiting back to Democratic system and looking forward to a brighter future.

The Foundation, an active actor in promoting liberalism and democracy around the world, has supported democratic transition of Myanmar by promoting economic freedom, rule of law and liberalism; and opened the office in Yangon in 2013. The Foundation also believes that individual freedoms and responsibilities are prerequisites for an open, free and democratic society.

The Foundation is currently working together with governmental institutions, parliamentarians, judges, lawyers, and civil society to support their work on improving the economic viability of the small and medium enterprises through policy reform and fair competition, strengthening democratic institutions, strengthening legal frameworks to improve rule of law, tackling corruption and enhancing the capacity of relevant stakeholders.
