It can be challenging for young people who grow up in orphanages to leave institutional care and find their independence. Despite the difficulties, some are finding ways to succeed with the right support and mindset. Here's the story of one such young man.

Children who are placed in orphanages usually go through many more difficulties than their peers. As well as the emotional challenges associated with being separated from their families, children in institutional care often lack support, and struggle in school….

The Kinnected Myanmar team!

Over the next 4 Tuesdays, we will be highlighting the work of our partner, Kinnected Myanmar (KM).

The KM project has four main focus areas:
1. A working group for orphanage directors aiming to help them understand the harmful effects of orphanage care, and to see that God designed children to be raised in families;
2. A working group for donors designed to create a peer environment for orphanage supporters as they navigate the complex transition process away from orphanage care;
3. A technical unit of qualified and experienced social workers that facilitate the safe reintegration of children into their families through robust procedures; and
4. A community of practice for orphanage directors that have successfully moved away from orphanage care and are now working on community development, community awareness and advocacy initiatives to prevent more children from entering into orphanage care.

The social work team (pictured below) has worked tirelessly to carry out this incredible work. KM is led by Dr. Manan Naw Jar (pictured on the left), who specialises in child protection and previously led the reintegration of 800+ children out of government institutions.

Hosanna Centre ကနေတစ်ဆင့် မိသားစု ၂၅ စုကို ဆန်၊ ကြာဇံ၊ ဆီ၊ ကြက်သွန်၊ အာလူးများ ပေးလှူသွားသော ဇနီးမောင်နှံနှစ်ဦးကို ကျေးဇူးအထူးတင်ပါတယ်။ ကပ်ရောဂါဖြစ်နေသော အချိန်ကာလမှာ မိသားစုများ စားဝတ်နေရေးအတွက် ရုန်းကန်နေကြရပါတယ်။ မိမိတို့၏ ရပ်ရွာအသိုင်းအဝန်းကို ပံ့ပိုးကူညီကြသော သူများအားလုံးကို လှိုက်လှဲစွာ ကျေးဇူးတင်ပါတယ်။

Packets of rice, vermicelli, potatoes, onions, and bottles of cooking oil have been donated to twenty-five families through Hosanna Community Centre, thanks to a wonderful couple's donation. During the pandemic, many families are struggling with every-day expenses. We are grateful for those who are supporting their communities at this time!

This year has brought many new challenges to all of us. Through it all, our social workers have continued to work hard to support and strengthen families; ensure children are in safe environments, and prevent family separation.

AVI is an Australian not-for-profit organisation who are committed to sustainable development around the world. We are so grateful for their support of our newest research project!

Child protection organisation Kinnected Myanmar will soon develop a research report based on data extracted from more than 30 residential care facilities over the past five years, thanks to support from the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and AVI.

last week our social workers travelled across Myanmar to check up on the health and well being of children who have been reintegrated with their families. Here are some trip details from our visit to Chin State!

Last week three of our social workers visited remote villages in Chin state, to check up on children from five different families who have left orphanages in Yangon and gone back to live with their families…

Recently our team received a generous grant from AVI, and yesterday we enjoyed a visit by their wonderful international project coordinator, Yin Yin Tha Tun! This grant will be used for a nationwide research project which will be starting soon. The project will give insights into the thousands of children living in privately run orphanages and children's homes across Myanmar.

For the first time in many months, our team has been able to visit areas outside of Yangon to monitor, in person, the children and families we work with. It's been great to see so many children happy and safe at home with their relatives!
