Myanmar is located on two tectonic plates: Indian Plate and Eurasian Plate. The recent 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar on March 28, 2025, was primarily caused by activity along the Sagaing Fault, a major tectonic boundary between the Indian and Eurasian plates. This fault runs north to south through Myanmar, passing near major cities such as Mandalay and Yangon. The earthquake resulted from the northward movement of the Indian plate, which produces a tearing effect along north-south trending vertical faults.

The earthquake's epicenter was located near Mandalay, with a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometers. Shallow earthquakes like this one tend to cause more severe surface shaking and damage due to their proximity to the Earth's surface.

The Sagaing Fault is known for its strike-slip motion, where tectonic plates slide horizontally past one another. This movement accumulates stress over time, which is eventually released as seismic energy during earthquakes. The region has experienced significant seismic events in the past, including a similar event in 1956.

The earthquake was caused by the release of accumulated stress along the Sagaing Fault due to the ongoing tectonic interaction between the Indian and Eurasian plates.
