When looking back at Myanmar's history, it is evident that ancient Myanmar societies excelled in engineering, systematically controlling and utilizing water resources for agriculture and urban development. 1. Pyu Period đď¸
The Pyu people were pioneers in hydraulic engineering (water utilization technology). In ancient cities like Beikthano, Hanlin, and Sri Ksetra, they dug moats along the city walls and systematically constructed diversion dams, reservoirs, and underground drainage systems to channel natural stream water into the cities in an astonishing manner.
2. Bagan Period đ
During the Bagan period, the irrigation system was greatly expanded to turn the drought-prone dry zone into a massive rice granary. Especially in the Kyaukse plains, they built dams, canals, and weir gatesâcollectively known as the âNine Districts of the Rice Fieldsââusing advanced engineering techniques, while also creating large reservoirs like Mya Kan around the city of Bagan.
3. Pinya Period đ°
In the post-Bagan Pinya period, the irrigation heritage of ancient kings was continuously maintained, and the distribution of water from rivers and streams was further improved. Even amidst the country's political instability, it was an era that successfully managed and kept vital agricultural waterways uninterrupted.
4. Inwa Period â
During the Inwa period, water systems were strategically utilized not only for agriculture but also for capital defense. Situated near the confluence of the Ayeyarwady and Myitnge (Dokhtawaddy) rivers, they constructed large d***s to prevent floods, while also using engineering to strategically design deep, protective moats along the city walls to keep enemies at bay.
5. Taungoo Period đĄď¸
During the Taungoo period of grand empire expansion, especially during the founding of the new city of Ketumati Toungoo, urban architecture and water supply systems were integrated. Looking down from the sky, they excavated prominent square-shaped moats, building the city layout surrounded by water using a highly accurate land surveying and layout system.
6. Nyaungyan Period đž
During the Nyaungyan period, engineering efforts were principally focused on restoring and expanding the damaged traditional irrigation systems in the Kyaukse and Mu river valleys. They upgraded water control gates to ensure a more equitable distribution of water, controlling the supply to strengthen the rural economy.
7. Konboung Period đ
The Konboung period was an era when traditional engineering reached its absolute zenith. When constructing the royal capital of Yadanabon (Mandalay), they designed the grand moat along with diversion canals (such as the Shwetachaung Canal) from Aung Pinle and Nanda Lakes to precisely channel clean water into the city, while also constructing massive reservoirs like the Maha Nanda Lake using the engineering expertise of the Konbaung kings.
8. Colonial Period đ
During the British colonial period, modern Western engineering technologies were introduced. In lower Myanmar regions, including Yangon, this transitional period systematically overhauled water supply systems (e.g., Hlawga and Gyobyu reservoirs) and drainage systems using concrete and massive iron pipelines.
