Have you ever tried “seasonal limited edition” of snacks in Japan?

Every season every year in Japan, many “seasonal limited edition” of snacks go on sale. One example is “Pocky”. Many of you might be familiar with its regular red package, but Ezaki Glico Co.,Ltd., which manufactures Pocky, has released variety of seasonal flavors in the past, such as sakura (cherry blossom) flavor in spring, coconut flavor in summer, purple sweet potato flavor in autumn, and white chocolate (which implicates snow) in winter. This is only one tiny part of it, and you can find many more snacks with seasonal flavors in Japan.
So, why is there such a variety in seasonal flavors? One major reason is the mind of “shun”, which means “the best season” in terms of taste and nutrition. Every food has its own “shun” season, and Japanese people traditionally enjoyed and appreciated each season through them.
Some of the most common “shun” food in autumn are pumpkins, sweet potatoes and chestnuts. What’s the “shun” food in your country in this time of the year?

★Voice from JICE Staff★

Ms. Higashi has been working for JICE Kansai Office since 2018. As a JICE coordinator, her responsibility is to support JDS fellows directly while they are staying in their university area.

“Hello from Osaka! Some of you may recognize me if you studied in Kansai-area/Hiroshima. I really hope that your study or experience in Japan is still an important part of yourself.

It has been very difficult time for all of us since this COVID-19 pandemic started. Both travelling inside and outside the country were restricted, and this had huge impact on JDS fellows as well. To talk about myself a little, I love travelling, and was used to travel to foreign countries during holiday seasons. Due to rapid advancement of ICT technology, we can now virtually travel or study in foreign countries without being there. However, I still think it is important to be physically there to experience the culture and atmosphere. Though the situation seems to be improving, I hope this pandemic will over soon and we can travel without any limitations.

As we JICE staff are always thinking of you and remembering you, do please keep us in touch!

Stay safe and hope to see you at some point!”

★Why do Japanese like wearing a mask? ★

COVID-19 has affected on our habit and life style immensely. One of the biggest changes is that many people get the habit to wear mask. However, actually, in Japan, it was not rare to see people wearing mask in public on a daily basis even before its pandemic.
For example, in Winter, you see many Japanese wearing a mask because the risk to get infected by flu is relatively high. In Spring season, you see some people waring mask to protect themselves from hay fever, which is incredibly intense in Japan compared to other countries. Some women put on mask to cover up the faces when they leave a house without makeup. Or even, there are some people wear a mask as a fashion style.

One can argue it’s a culture that Japanese are shy and comfortable hiding their facial expression. You might noticed Japanese people cover up their mouth while laughing. Japanese people use emoji as “^^” oppose to “:D” with mouth in English.

Do people in your country like wearing a mask?

Clean Japan? Complicated garbage rule?
-How to sort and dispose the garbage in Japan-

If you have ever lived in Japan, you must have been faced with the challenge of sorting and cleaning your garbage meticulously, making sure to put it out on the right day in the right colored bag.

In Japan, there’s a garbage collecting system and rule in each municipality. Depending on the day of the week, you must throw away one type of garbage or another. Mainly garbage is separated in 4 categories: “Burnable (燃えるゴミ)”, “Non-Burnable (燃えないゴミ)”, “ Recyclable (資源ゴミ)” and “Oversized (粗大ゴミ)”.
Recyclable garbage is classified into cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles and papers etc. As it would be recycled, you have to wash bottles and cans before you dispose them. For oversized garbage, you have to request for picking it up and pay a fee.
Moreover, in some municipalities, you have to buy designated plastic bags for the garbage disposal. It is introduced in order to reduce the garbage.

It seems very complicated but you don’t have to worry about it. There is even a calendar to know on which day the garbage can be collected. How’s the garbage disposal system in your country? I guess it’s more simple than the one in Japan :)
