Where did the Earthquake Relief Money Go?!
According to the junta's statement released on April 24, more than USD $2.437 million in international aid has been received, along with 5 million Korean Won (approx. USD $3,580), 15 million Indian Rupees (approx. USD $175,160), 2 million Thai Baht (approx. USD $60,000), 3,150 Singapore Dollars (approx. USD $2,430), in total, over USD $2.678 million and 115.876 billion Myanmar Kyats have reportedly been received.
It was also announced that 2,635.92 tons of relief supplies and 1,197.12 tons of rescue equipment have been received.
According to the statements, the junta has reportedly provided 1.8 million MMK (1,800,000 MM kyats) per person to those who died due to the earthquake in Mandalay, totaling 3.873 billion kyats for 2,152 individuals. Additionally, it was stated that basic food supplies such as rice, oil, salt, beans, and fermented fish paste were provided for one month's consumption to the earthquake-affected people, amounting to a total value of 7.26 billion kyats.
For those who died in the Sagaing earthquake, 1 million MMK (1,000,000 MM kyat) was provided to each person, totaling 546 million kyats (0.546 billion kyats) for 546 individuals.
According to the junta’s statements, the total financial assistance provided in Mandalay and Sagaing amounted to only about 11.68 billion kyats.
This is only one-tenth of the Myanmar kyats received by the military junta, and the remaining over 100 billion Myanmar kyats and $2.678 million in foreign currency are still missing.
The relief items being distributed by the junta including tarpaulins, generators, water purifiers, household goods, and etc. to Naypyidaw and certain other regions are likely part of the over 2,000 tons of supplies received from the international community.
So, where is the remaining earthquake relief fund and humanitarian aid that have reached the junta but are still unaccounted for???
