Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and Helvetas Myanmar Celebrate the Successful Conclusion of the Gulf of Mottama Project
On February 13, 2025, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and Helvetas Myanmar jointly hosted the Gulf of Mottama Project (GoMP) Closing Event in Yangon. The event brought together a diverse group of partners and stakeholders to reflect on the project’s achievements, share key experiences, and discuss lessons learned over its decade-long implementation.
Ms. Gabriella Spirli, Head of Cooperation at SDC, opened the event by welcoming attendees and celebrating the successful completion of the Gulf of Mottama Project. She highlighted the project’s significant contributions to biodiversity conservation, sustainable livelihoods, and community resilience, even amid challenging circumstances. In her remarks, she stated, “The success of this project is a testament to the dedication of our partners and, most importantly, the local communities—the true guardians of the Gulf. While the project concludes, the systems, capacities, and partnerships we’ve built must endure. Sustainability is a journey, and we trust that local communities will continue to lead the way.” Ms. Spirli also reaffirmed Switzerland’s commitment to supporting sustainable development and environmental conservation in Myanmar, adding, “Let us carry forward the lessons learned and continue working for the people and ecosystems of Myanmar.”
Rakesh Munankami, Chief Technical Advisor, and Than Htike Aung, Project Manager of GoMP/Helvetas, presented the project’s key achievements and lessons. Panel discussions on biodiversity and livelihoods featured project beneficiaries and partners, who shared insights into the project’s impacts, key takeaways, and strategies for sustaining its legacy. The event also included an interactive role-play demonstration by CEPA Focal Persons, showcasing how they conduct awareness sessions and training on the wise use of coastal natural resources within their communities.
In recognition of their invaluable contributions, representatives of community-based organisations (CBOs) were awarded certificates of appreciation.
Mr. Andrew Wilson, Country Director of Helvetas Myanmar, expressed his gratitude to SDC for its long-term support and flexibility, which enabled the project to adapt to evolving challenges. He also acknowledged the dedication of all project partners, stating, “Helvetas Myanmar remains committed to supporting Myanmar’s sustainable development and will continue to engage in the country through both short- and long-term initiatives.”
