In 2019, Czech scientists came up with a very interesting project called Plasma for People, which has the potential to change the global healthcare industry in the future. His goal is to bring to market an organic replacement for blood plasma.
The main ingredient is edestin, that is, a protein obtained from h**p seeds, which was already used in the country in the 50s in the treatment of tuberculosis in children.
The project is currently in the stage of preparation for a clinical trial.
Artificial blood plasma based on edestin can be produced approximately ten times cheaper and brings a number of other advantages - it cannot be contaminated with prion diseases, HIV viruses or hepatitis, and it can also be given to patients who, for religious or ethical reasons, do not allow the use of blood plasma obtained from donors.
In addition, organic blood plasma lasts much longer and does not need to be stored in the same conditions as frozen human plasma.
Commercial h**p seeds (for human consumption) contain on average 30-35% protein, of which 60-80% is edestin (the rest is albumin).
A particular strain of Korean h**p, Cheungsam, has been proposed for use as a "superior antioxidant nutrient" because it contains the free radical scavenging activity of 2,2-diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH).
Edestin is a globular protein (biologically active) as opposed to a fibrous protein (structural). It is similar to serum globulin (blood plasma) and the biologically active protein edestin is metabolized in the human body.
It is capable of biosynthesis into: hormones (which regulate all processes in the body), hemoglobin (which transports oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen dioxide), enzymes (which catalyze and control biochemical reactions) and antibodies (immunoglobulins which prevent the attack of bacteria). , pathogens, as well as toxins or antigens when entering the body).
Edestin also has a unique ability to stimulate the process of production of antibodies against invasive substances and contains a low content of aggravating phosphorus (kidney diseases, etc.)
