International Day for Biological Diversity – 22 May
Nature connects us all. From mountain pastures and traditional grazing landscapes to the rich diversity of plants, insects, and birds, every species plays an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Protecting biodiversity means protecting our future, our communities, and our traditions.
On this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity, we proudly organized the “Youth and Farmers Walk for Biodiversity” in National Park Galichica, bringing together young people, local farmers, and nature lovers to learn from each other and reconnect with nature. Through traditional shepherding knowledge and biodiversity learning activities, participants explored the importance of sustainable grazing for preserving mountain ecosystems.
The main activity was the biodiversity screening of plant species within this particular grassland habitat. Together with a biodiversity expert, youth participants and local farmers managed to collect and identify around 40 different plant species in only 20 minutes. It was extraordinary to witness how rich the biodiversity of these mountain pastures truly is within such a short time. This clearly demonstrates the ecological value of these habitats and highlights how important it is to support traditional grazing practices and increase the number of grazing animals in the area in order to maintain healthy and biodiversity-rich pastures.
Together, through cooperation, education, and community engagement, we can contribute to the protection of biodiversity for future generations.
This activity is both part of a small action implemented by the organization Une Gruaja within the framework of the PONT fund and part of ongoing project “Restoration of semi-dry grassland habitats in NP Galichica funded by CEPF.
