Promoting Wildlife Conservation: The island nation of Madagascar is home to some of the rarest species on earth. Many of these species – found nowhere else on earth - are threatened with extinction. Increasingly, biologists working in Madagascar have realized that the presence of feral dogs has a negative impact on the health of wildlife populations. Studies have shown that spaying and neutering f

eral dog populations can reduce their numbers in the long term. Reducing the number of feral dogs preying on wildlife is a critical step in ensuring the future of endangered wild species. Enhancing Animal Welfare: Feral dogs in Madagascar often suffer from malnutrition, starvation, injury, and disease. Our veterinary teams will provide medical care, vaccinations, as well as spaying and neutering dogs. We will also transport sick, injured and orphaned dogs to a shelter where they will receive medical attention, socialization, and a great place to stay until a forever home can be found for them. Safeguarding Human Health: Feral dog populations are known to be important carriers of diseases that can be transmitted to humans. In rural areas of Madagascar where health care is not available, zoonotic disease can have devastating consequences. Reducing zoonotic disease through feral dog vaccinations and reducing population numbers through spaying and neutering can reduce the risk of human exposure to devastating diseases like rabies.

Today the team is headed out to Ampohana to meet with the Madagascar Research & Conservation Institute!! There they will work the local community to sterilise and vaccinate dogs who pose a threat to endangered sea turtle populations. We are so excited to for the start of our annual campaign in the communities surrounding Andasibe-Mantadia National Park!! We’ll be offering free spay/neuter and vaccination services for dogs and cats in the area, all while helping train the next generation of Malagasy veterinarians. This will be our 10th year in Andasibe and we could not be happier to be back!

Clinics like these are critically important for supporting conservation efforts, improving human health, and promoting animal welfare. We are so thankful for the communities who have continued to host us all these years and to all the funders who make the work possible, especially the Brigitte Bardot Foundation for making this and many other campaigns this year possible!

We have been hard at work! Our recent campaigns have seen our veterinary team and their partners sterilize 451 animals and vaccinate an additional 2114, plus we have been able to expand our services to several new communities in Antananarivo. Every animal we treat is a major win for animal welfare and conservation and step towards controlling the spread of dangerous diseases like rabies!!!

In our first every sterilization campaign in 2014 we treated 50 dogs and it was a huge achievement. We could have never have imagined how far we would come and just how many animals we would be able to reach. And there are still so many more campaigns to come this year! Alefa!!!

We would like to sincerely thank the Ministère de l'élevage- Direction de Service Vétérinaire DSV- Vétérinaire Sanitaire Dr Lys Hélène, the communes of Ambatofotsy, Ambatofahavalo, & Andoharanofotsy, and Le Refuge Gasy Mobilisation for Animal. For the past two weeks MDI has been collaborating with the Worldwide Veterinary Service to offer a hands-on teaching clinic for 16 veterinary students from the University of Antananarivo. During this clinic students had the chance to learn how to conduct sterilization surgeries and practice their skills under the guidance of skilled WVS and MDI vets. We are so excited to have seen this take shape and so proud of these students for all their hard work! Surgical training for veterinarians can be difficult to obtain in Madagascar, so opportunities like these are critical for building capacity promoting animal welfare. Thank you so much to the WVS team and the Department of Veterinary Sciences and Medicine of the University of Antananarivo for making this possible!!!
