Teach For Madagascar is a not-for-profit organization founded in November 2014 and registered as a volunteer-driven association in June 2015 with a mission to mobilize, recruit, and train the educated group to contribute to education. On November 8, 2021, Teach For Madagascar officially became an NGO and signed a convention with the Ministry of National Education. Since its establishment, TFM has
recruited over 1000 volunteers to participate in our programs. Our volunteers play a vital role in our mission. Their commitment and dedication help us achieve our long-term vision. How has a small group of Malagasy young adults been able to inspire an education movement in Madagascar? In early 2014, the first team of Teach For Madagascar comprised six final-year graduate Malagasy students and a teacher who decided to take responsibility for the country's development through education. United by a shared vision and commitment, the team of seven thrived together, investing time, ideas, and energy to launch the first education project in March 2015. In June 2015, Teach For Madagascar legally became a volunteer-driven association. The actions quickly spread and inspired well-educated young Malagasy adults from all walks of life to join the education movement.
2015-2022
LET'S TEACH: SANTATRA, KOLO, VAKANA, JARY
The programs recruited and trained volunteers, or Zoky, the term we used to call our volunteers, to bring the best of their skills, passion, and talents to support students in public schools (EPP-CEG-LYCÉE) with civic and gender education, critical thinking, media literacy, English, environment, and after-school tutoring programs. A literacy program was created explicitly for the Santatra Street project for out-of-school children. In addition to teaching, volunteers had the opportunity to build relationships and bonds with students as mentors. LET'S READ: Diary Nofy
Initiated in September 2019, Let's Read is dedicated to igniting the love of reading among Malagasy children. Diary Nofy's children's storybooks were published in two editions in 2021 and 2023, with eleven stories selected through nationwide writing contests. Nearly 50,000 books have been printed in Malagasy and French, and audio and braille versions have been circulated in EPP (public primary schools), schools for children with visual impairment, associations working with children, and orphanages throughout Madagascar since February 2021. Let's Read Campaign, Let's Read Ambassador Program, and the KOKO mascot are among the strategies to build an enjoyable and healthy reading culture and create a positive association with reading among Malagasy children. LET'S CONNECT: TALY CORPS
Initiated in 2017 and established in 2021, TALY CORPS is a 3-month program dedicated to supporting rural teachers (particularly the FRAM teachers) with educational materials and the capacity to build a positive and interactive learning environment. From April 2021 until December 2023, the TALY Corps program produced 18 TALY Corps volunteers of three cohorts and trained 153 FRAM teachers from 33 EPP located in regions of Androy, Haute Matsiatra, Vatovavy, Atsimo Andrefana, Alaotra Mangoro.
2023-2028: 5-YEAR MISSION
As part of a strategy to improve its efficiency and extend its 5-year mission to rural schools, starting in 2023, TFM focuses on two projects: LET'S READ and LET'S CONNECT. With committed, dedicated, and passionate leaders filling the roles of our non-profit board and staff, we continue to provide opportunities and openings for local stakeholders and education enthusiasts to play a part in the "Education for Change" movement.
