Under the title “Water, Textiles and Innovation: Towards Sustainable Solutions”, HEIS organised two Workshop and Partner Matchmaking and Networking Events as part of the MISSION4WATER project.

The events brought together representatives of institutions responsible for water management and environmental protection, public utility companies, local authorities, chambers of commerce and development agencies, the textile and other relevant industries, educational institutions and the non-governmental sector.

The event in Bijeljina brought together stakeholders from Bijeljina region in Republika Srpska, while the event in Mostar gathered participants from the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The workshops focused on issues related to microplastic and microfibre pollution from the textile industry and their impact on water resources.

Presentations covered the state of water resources and wastewater treatment, microplastics and human health, material flows in the textile industry, policies and technologies related to wastewater treatment, and the monitoring of microplastics in
wastewater treatment plants.

The second part of the events was dedicated to matchmaking and networking, providing participants
with an opportunity to exchange experiences, discuss practical challenges and explore possibilities
for future cooperation. Examples of good practices and opportunities for the development of innovative projects were also presented.

💧Addressing microplastic pollution requires cooperation between institutions, industry, researchers
and identified relevant stakeholders. Through the exchange of knowledge and experience and the development of new partnerships, we can contribute to reducing pollution and improving the protection of our water resources.

Mission4Water 3rd Open Call for Innovative Projects – Applications Open! 💧

The MISSION4WATER 3rd Open Call is now open, inviting SMEs, research institutions and other key stakeholders to develop collaborative solutions addressing water pollution in the Adriatic-Ionian region.

👉 Expression of Interest (EoI) – not ready for a full proposal yet? Share your idea and our partners will help you shape it and connect with potential partners.

Throwback to our June Webinar Series!

Last month, we hosted a three-part webinar series focused on a single, critical mission: figuring out how to stop microplastics and textile waste from polluting our water.

Rather than just talking about the problem, we wanted to connect scientific research with real-world business solutions. Here is a quick look at the three sessions we hosted:

-Introduction to the microplastics pollution problem: We dove into the very real health and ecological risks of microplastics and microfibers.
-Understanding where to act for eco-innovation: We looked at how to use practical tools like Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and green patents to design better products.
-From Insights to innovations for cleaner waters: We explored scalable solutions ranging from advanced wastewater treatment technologies to zero-waste fashion brands.

On 11 June 2026, the Textile Trade Association – Textile Cluster, in cooperation with Mother Teresa University in Skopje, successfully implemented the workshop “New Heritage: Circular Fashion Solutions to Reduce Microplastic Pollution”, held at the premises of the University.

Through a series of lectures and discussions, participants explored the environmental and social impacts of the textile industry, with a particular focus on fast fashion, textile waste, sustainable materials, circular economy principles, and the growing issue of microplastic pollution from synthetic textiles.

The programme also showcased innovative solutions, from recycling textile waste and sustainable design practices to the application of artificial intelligence in sustainability and new technologies for monitoring microplastics in aquatic ecosystems.

The day concluded with the interactive workshop New Heritage, where students transformed old ties carrying personal and family stories into contemporary fashion pieces, demonstrating how creativity, sustainability, and heritage can come together to reduce waste and inspire new approaches to design.

The event highlighted the importance of collaboration between education, science and industry in developing solutions that contribute to cleaner water, reduced pollution, and a more sustainable textile sector.

On 6 May 2026, the Textile Trade Association - Textile cluster (TTA-TC), in cooperation with the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy in Skopje and the Institute of Textile Engineering, successfully organised a workshop within the framework of the EU-funded MISSION4WATER project titled “Responsible Behaviour in the Fashion Industry in the Context of Microplastics”.

The workshop brought together students, professors, and researchers with the aim of addressing microplastic pollution and its wider environmental impacts on water, food, and ecosystems, while promoting sustainable practices in the textile sector.

The event served as a multidisciplinary platform combining scientific presentations, practical training, and an interactive panel discussion, fostering knowledge exchange between academia and applied research in sustainable textile development.

Participants explored key sustainability challenges in the textile industry through presentations on the MISSION4WATER project, microplastics and their environmental impact, sustainable fashion design, circular economy principles, and innovative technologies such as 3D printing with recycled filaments.

The workshop also included practical sessions on garment repair and textile reuse, encouraging responsible behaviour in fashion and hands-on learning in sustainable design approaches. A visit to the INNO FAB laboratory introduced participants to advanced 3D printing technologies and recycled materials in textile applications.

The programme concluded with a multidisciplinary panel discussion addressing the environmental impact of the textile industry, the migration of microplastics into food systems, and the importance of innovation, education, and cross-sector cooperation in tackling sustainability challenges.

The workshop contributed to strengthening cooperation between academia and industry within the MISSION4WATER project and promoted innovative solutions for water protection and sustainable textile production.
