Anchor Your Identity in Christ

Several years ago, I preached a message on how the devil sometimes uses the first-person pronoun to plant thoughts in our heads to deceive us.

For example, he doesn’t say, “You have an eating disorder” or “You have an addiction.” The devil uses the first-person pronoun to sow thoughts such as these in your mind: “I have an eating disorder” or “I am addicted to pornography.”

He makes you think that you are thinking those thoughts of defeat. He wants you to believe that is who you are.

Upon hearing this message, a man named Walter, whom the devil had used this strategy on and trapped in a destructive addiction for many years, went home after church, locked himself in his room, and for the first time declared out loud, “I am not an addict!” He chose to reject this evil mind-set in the name of Jesus.

He related this: “At that very moment, I felt something powerful happen inside me. I don’t know how to describe this. It was as if life became spectacular because of the love of God, and I couldn’t contain the feeling.”

After making that confession out loud, Walter said, “My addiction stopped. I just lost all interest, and I don’t feel even a little bit tempted. All the wrong desires are gone, and best of all, I know I love Jesus more than ever before and I can’t live without Him. I am renewed. I am reborn. I know that everything is in His control, and I am blessed and forgiven.”

Wow! What an amazing testimony of God’s power and goodness in this brother’s life. With just one declaration, he broke the mental stronghold that the devil had placed him under for many years.

That is truly the power of right believing. If you can change what you believe, you can change your life, just like this brother did.

Are there lies about your identity that you believe in today? Break the power of those lies by declaring your identity in Christ.

Say out loud, “I am a child of God. I am healed, forgiven, righteous, and holy in Christ Jesus.” Instead of believing the devil’s lies when he uses the first-person pronoun strategy against you, speak your true identity in Jesus.

ГОСПОДЬ БЛИЗОК

«Приблизились замышляющие лукавство; далеки они от закона Твоего. Близок Ты, Господи, и все заповеди Твои истина» (Пс.118:150-151).

Давид здесь говорил: «Если враги мои приблизились так близко, чтобы погубить меня, то насколько Ты, Боже, ближе ко мне во время нужды!»

И вот Ему, близкому своему, повторяет псалмопевец жалобы на бедствие свое, у Него просит защиты.

Бог говорит, что Он особенно близок к сокрушённым сердцем и смирённым духом: «Ибо так говорит Высокий и Превознесённый, вечно Живущий, –Святый имя Его: Я живу на высоте небес и во святилище, и также с сокрушёнными и смирёнными духом, чтоб оживлять дух смирённых и оживлять сердца сокрушённых». (Ис.57:15).

Доверимся, дорогие, Господу в сокрушении наших сердец! Господь да сочувствует и поспешит на помощь вам, когда душа в смятении! Да будет Милосердный близок к вам в ваших печалях и оживит ваш дух! Во имя Господа Иисуса Христа. Аминь!

WE WILL NOT LOSE HOPE

"I call to You, Lord... I hope in the Lord, my soul hopes; I trust in His word. My soul waits for the Lord more than the morning, more than the morning waits for me." (Psalm 129:1,5-6)

The author of the Psalm is in a dark abyss of life. He has nowhere to expect help except from God. Therefore, he earnestly calls to the heavenly throne from the depths of (his troubles). From the bottom of the abyss, he remembers the word of the Lord, His promises. His soul "hopes" and "waits" for the manifestation of the Lord's mercy with great impatience, more than the guards - the mornings (they refer to the night guards, who walked around the city waiting for their morning shift). More than an hour's wait for dawn, the author of the Psalm longs to see the Lord shed light on his darkness.

We too will continue to believe in God, for whom there are no too difficult problems and too complex choices. May your prayer not go unanswered! May the Father of all mercy show you His deliverance from the depths of sorrows and worries! In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

SEPTEMBER 5
Effortless Change

I’d like you to picture a strong and healthy tree. A strong and healthy tree does not worry about producing fruit or getting rid of the dead leaves on it. As long as it receives the right amount of sunshine, water, and nutrients, it will have healthy sap flowing in it that is brimming with all the right nutrients and that naturally pushes out all the dead leaves. And as long as its inward life—its healthy sap life—keeps flowing, new leaves will spring forth on this tree and good fruits will naturally grow and flourish on all the branches.

My friend, as you begin to receive the sunshine of God’s favor and take in the water of His Word, as you begin to feed on Jesus’ forgiveness in your life and your righteous standing in Christ, the dead leaves of guilt, fear, addictions, and every type of disorder will begin to be pushed out by the new life of Jesus within you.

The transformation you will experience, when it is not based on your own discipline and self-control, is truly effortless. It is no longer, “How will I overcome this anger problem?” or “How will I beat this cigarette addiction?” or “How can I curb this habit of overeating when I am stressed and insecure?” Instead, it becomes, “How will Jesus in me overcome this anger problem, this cigarette addiction, this habit of overeating?”

The fruits of your success will be effortless. One by one, the addictions, dysfunctions, and negative emotions will begin to drop off from your life like dead leaves, and new leaves (new positive thoughts and attitudes), new flowers (new desires and dreams), and new fruit (new behaviors and habits) will begin to flourish in your life.

Jesus’ word to you today is simply to “abide in Me,” and you will bear much fruit.

Speaking Out in Faith

Do you know that as God’s child, you can speak positively into your negative situation and see it change for the better?

Let me show you some scriptures about faith and speaking that will help you. Romans 10:9 tells us that “if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved”. Our Lord Jesus also said, “Whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says” (Mark 11:23).

Now, reread what the apostle Paul wrote in today’s verse. Do you notice a pattern here? Faith involves believing in your heart as well as speaking with your mouth. You and I, we are made in God’s image. When God first saw darkness, He didn’t say, “Gosh, it’s so dark.” What did God do? He called forth light by speaking. He said, “Let there be light” (Gen. 1:3).

In the New Testament, our Lord Jesus spoke to the storm and it subsided. He spoke to the fig tree and it withered. He spoke to the demons and they fled. He spoke to the sick and they were healed. He spoke to the dead and they lived.

Similarly, when we are faced with darkness in any area of our lives today, or trapped in a storm of challenges, let’s not be mired in looking at the problems and despairing. We should also call forth what we want to see! If we find ourselves caught in a dangerous situation, we should declare, “The Lord is my refuge and my fortress.” If there is a sickness in our body, we can call forth our healing by saying, “Thank You, Jesus, by Your stripes I am healed!” Start speaking forth your protection, your health, and your victory today!

WHEN WE UNDERSTAND THE FLEETINESS OF OUR LIVES

"For man does not know his time. Just as fish fall into the net and into the trap, so do human children get caught in a time of trouble when it comes unexpectedly upon them" (Ecclesiastes 9:12).

Fishes and birds fall into the net and traps. Often, we humans are not able to foresee the unfortunate convergence of circumstances that will soon happen to us. We do not know our own time; we do not know what will happen soon.

Therefore, understanding the fragility of our human life, humbling ourselves and not challenging God's providence (for "a man cannot comprehend the things that God does from beginning to end"), let us say together with Ecclesiastes: "Though a sinner does evil a hundred times and stumbles upon it, yet I know that it is for the good to fear God, who is mindful of His face" (Ecclesiastes 3:11; 8:12).

—God, You govern the world by Your will! Often Your ways are inaccessible to my understanding. But I thank You for caring about my well-being, despite various unexpected and bitter situations in life! And I ask: let no misfortunes be able to interrupt my communication with You and keep me away from You! Let godliness not leave me even in the worst of times, for "the fear of the Lord is the source of life, which withholds death from the nets" (Prov. 14:27). In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. And Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him down there. The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

It’s Not What You Have but Who You Have

Would you consider the young man Joseph, who was about to be sold into slavery, “a successful man”?

Of course not!

Yet, God says in His own words that Joseph was a successful man.

God's definition of success is contrary to the world's definition. Corporate America measures success based on what you have done, what you have accomplished, and what you have accumulated. It is based entirely on you focusing all your time, energy, and resources in meriting titles and collecting accomplishments.

Now, we have witnessed how this self-indulgent accumulation has led to the subprime crisis, the decimation of investment banks, and a widespread international financial meltdown.

My friend, I want to encourage you to begin to see that the world’s model of success is unstable and built upon a foundation that is shakable. It may have the appearance of the good life, but it is temporal, and we have all seen for ourselves how the world’s transient wealth can dissipate like smoke and easily slip away like the shifting sands in the desert.

From Genesis 39:2, it is clear that success is not what you have, but rather who you have! Joseph literally had nothing materially, but at the same time, he had everything because the Lord was with him. The material things that you have accumulated or are feverishly trying to amass do not make you a success. It is the presence of the Lord in your life that makes you a success!

We need to learn to stop pursuing things and to start pursuing Him. God sees your relationship with Him as the only thing that you need for every success in your life. I can’t imagine starting in a worse place than Joseph. He was completely naked. He had nothing! No bank accounts, no educational qualifications, no natural connections with people of influence, nothing. Thank God the Bible records a picture of Joseph who began with nothing, so that you and I can have hope today. If you think that like Joseph, you have nothing, well, you can start believing in the power of the presence of the Lord in your life. Start looking to Jesus and claim that promise in that scripture for yourself!

Say, “The Lord is with ME, and I am a successful person.”

Say it a hundred times if you have to, and begin to see this as your reality. Stick this promise on your mirror, and every morning when you brush your teeth, remind yourself that today, as you go to work, as you go to school, as you start the day caring for your children at home (or do whatever it is that you need to do), the Lord is with you. And because He is with you, YOU ARE ALREADY A SUCCESS! When you have Jesus in your life, you are no longer trying to be a success; you ARE a success!
