Where forests, wetlands, and cultural heritage come together, a unique landscape unfolds...

🌿 Bouhachem Natural Park is home to remarkable wetlands and forest ecosystems. Its forests support iconic species such as the Barbary macaque and the Barbary deer, while these ecosystems provide essential services such as water regulation, erosion control, carbon storage, and natural resources for local communities.

But this balance is fragile.
⚠️ Overgrazing and pressure on forest resources are affecting ecosystem health.
💧 Soil erosion and changes to water flows are impacting natural habitats.
🔥 Fires and habitat degradation threaten biodiversity.
🌡️ Climate change is increasing drought conditions.
🌿 Wetlands and temporary ponds remain particularly vulnerable.
🧩 Habitat fragmentation is reducing ecological connectivity.

🤝 The Mediterranean Biodiversity Consortium works with managers and local stakeholders, through the project, to restore degraded forest areas, improve knowledge of wetlands and their role in biodiversity and water regulation, and raise awareness of the importance of conserving forests and wetlands for future generations.

🌱 The goal is simple: protect what still works, and restore what is at risk.
✅ Healthier and better-conserved forest and wetland ecosystems
✅ Improved water conservation and ecosystem services
✅ Reduced erosion and stronger climate resilience

Because protecting Bouhachem is not only about nature — it is about safeguarding the ecosystems, natural heritage, and resources that support both biodiversity and local communities.

📍 Morocco
Where the ocean meets a quiet lagoon and stretches into the desert, a rare landscape takes shape…

🌿🦩 National Park brings together three distinct ecosystems — ocean, lagoon, and desert — across a vast natural area. At its heart lies the Naïla Lagoon, a nationally protected site and a Wetland of International Importance, which serves as a vital sanctuary for over 200 bird species, including several of global significance.

🎣🧂Socio-economic activities and livelihoods are closely linked to this site, including artisanal fishing, salt-related activities, and growing ecotourism initiatives, all of which contribute to supporting local communities.

But this balance remains delicate.
🌊 Rising sea levels and natural predation have affected bird nesting success.
🚐 Seasonal tourism and human presence remain limited but require careful management.

🤝 The Mediterranean Biodiversity Consortium works with the managers and local stakeholders through the project in strengthening the park’s attractiveness while developing ecotourism activities that benefit local communities. It also promotes ecological restoration actions to support the return and successful breeding of flamingos.

🌱 The goal is simple: protect what still works, and restore what is at risk.
✅ Improved conditions for flamingo nesting and reproduction
✅ Increased awareness of biodiversity and environmental protection
✅ Strengthened socio-economic benefits for local communities

Because protecting Khenifiss is not only about conserving nature — it’s about supporting a balanced relationship between ecosystems, biodiversity, and the people connected to them.

📍 Tunisia

Where and flowing waters shape the landscape, a rich natural area thrives…

🌿 Oued Ezzen National Park lies in a region shaped by and valleys, with dense forests of oak supporting a wide range of endemic plant and animal species. These play an essential role in regulating water, protecting soils, storing carbon, and providing natural resources — while contributing to local livelihoods.

But this balance is fragile.

⚠️ Deforestation and illegal logging are degrading forest ecosystems.
🐄 Overgrazing is limiting natural vegetation recovery.
🏕️ Unregulated tourism is affecting sensitive habitats.
🔫 Poaching threatens wildlife.
🌡️ Climate change and the increased risk of drought and forest fires.

🤝 The Mediterranean Biodiversity Consortium works with managers through the project to better regulate tourism activities through the development of an innovative co-management model with local communities; whilst contributing to the reforestation of previously deforested areas, and testing the natural regeneration potential and resilience to climate-related hazards of different tree species.
