Have you ever heard of Haketia?

On the occasion of the International Museum Day, the Moroccan Jewish Heritage Museum, in partnership with Instituto Cervantes, is organizing a screening of the documentary *“Haketía, Haketía”* by Line Amsellem and Pierre-Emmanuel Dersoir-Vermande.
The film offers a warm and humorous look into Haketia, a unique language blending Spanish, Hebrew, and Moroccan Darija, once spoken by the Jews of Northern Morocco after their arrival from Andalusia, and today considered an endangered part of Morocco’s shared cultural memory.
If you are interested in history, languages, memory, and Morocco’s cultural diversity, this is a beautiful opportunity to discover a fascinating and often overlooked part of Moroccan heritage.

بمناسبة اليوم العالمي للمتاحف، ينظم متحف التراث اليهودي المغربي بشراكة مع معهد سيرفانتيس عرضًا للفيلم الوثائقي “حاكيتية، حاكيتية”، للمخرجين لين أمسالم وبيير إيمانويل درسوار فيرماند.
يقدم الفيلم نظرة دافئة ومليئة بالفكاهة على لغة “الحاكيتية”، وهي لغة فريدة تمزج بين الإسبانية والعبرية والدارجة المغربية، وكان يتحدث بها يهود شمال المغرب بعد قدومهم من الأندلس، قبل أن تصبح اليوم جزءًا نادرًا ومهددًا بالاندثار من الذاكرة المغربية.

At the Rabat International Book Fair, we had the honor of welcoming Maxime Karoutchi to our booth, named in tribute to Zohra El Fassia. And then, naturally, the moment spoke for itself! he began singing “Hak a Mama.” No script, no performance, just a shared connection to a living heritage. This is what it looks like when culture is not just remembered, but felt.

في المعرض الدولي للكتاب بالرباط، كان لنا شرف استقبال ماكسيم الكاروتشي في رواقنا الذي يحمل اسم زهرة الفاسية. وكأن اللحظة كانت بديهية، بدأ يغني “هاك آ ماما” دون أي ترتيب أو بروتوكول. لم يكن ذلك عرضًا، بل تعبيرًا صادقًا عن ارتباط حيّ بتراث مغربي يهودي لا يزال حيًا في الذاكرة والوجدان. هكذا تُنقل الذاكرة… وهكذا تستمر.

We had the absolute pleasure of welcoming Suzanne Harroch to our booth at the Rabat Book Fair, where she captivated a group of young attendees with a powerful and heartfelt conversation about what it means to be a Moroccan Jew. Some people are simply born with the gift of connecting, inspiring, and speaking with authenticity, and Suzanne is undoubtedly one of them. Her words sparked curiosity, pride, and meaningful dialogue among the youth who joined us. Our participation in this year’s fair has been all about celebrating identity, culture, and shared stories, and moments like this remind us why it matters so much. During our recent regional conference in Essaouira, organized by Association Mimouna with its partners, participants from across the Middle East and North Africa came together to exchange perspectives. Ari Gordon, Director of Muslim-Jewish Relations at the American Jewish Committee, reflected on his upbringing and his commitment to understanding Muslim communities, highlighting the role of dialogue in strengthening Jewish-Muslim relations.

خلال مؤتمرنا الإقليمي الأخير في الصويرة، الذي نظمته جمعية ميمونة بشراكة مع شركائها، اجتمع مشاركون من مختلف أنحاء الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا لتبادل وجهات النظر.

ومن بينهم آري غوردون، مدير العلاقات الإسلامية-اليهودية في اللجنة اليهودية الأمريكية، الذي استعرض تجربته الشخصية واهتمامه بفهم المجتمعات المسلمة، مؤكدًا أهمية الحوار في تعزيز العلاقات بين المسلمين واليهود.

The discussion led by Ms. Lamia Radi, President & Founder of la Fondation Mémoires pour l’Avenir and former Ambassador of Morocco to Norway, explored Morocco’s Christian heritage within the broader fabric of its plural identity. Drawing on the experience of the Toumliline Monastery, she revisited a period when interfaith dialogue was actively practiced, bringing together Muslim, Jewish, and Christian intellectuals in a shared space of exchange. The example of Toumliline grounded the conversation in a concrete historical moment, reminding participants that coexistence in Morocco is rooted in lived experience and institutional memory, not just in principle.

قادَت السيدة لمياء الراضي، الرئيسة المؤسسة لمؤسسة «ذاكرات من أجل المستقبل» والسفيرة السابقة للمغرب لدى النرويج، نقاشًا تناول التراث المسيحي في المغرب ضمن النسيج الأوسع لهويته المتعددة. واستنادًا إلى تجربة دير تومليلين، استحضرت مرحلة كان فيها الحوار بين الأديان ممارسة فعلية، حيث اجتمع مثقفون مسلمون ويهود ومسيحيون في فضاء مشترك للتبادل. وقد أتاح مثال تومليلين تأطير النقاش في سياق تاريخي ملموس، مذكّرًا المشاركين بأن التعايش في المغرب يستند إلى تجربة معيشة وذاكرة مؤسساتية، وليس مجرد مبدأ نظري.

During the regional conference, a stop at St. Andrew’s Church in Tangier, an Anglican church known for its unique Andalusian architecture, offered a powerful moment to reflect on the diversity of Christian presence in the Middle East and North Africa. Beyond theological differences and rites, each Christian denomination carries its own cultural expression, visible in its traditions, languages, and even architectural styles. In this space, where Moroccan-Andalusian design meets Anglican heritage, this plurality becomes tangible. The presence of participants from different backgrounds, including Maronite and Chaldean Christians, highlighted how these distinct identities are not divisions, but a richness, an integral part of the region’s religious and cultural mosaic, and a reminder of the importance of preserving minority traditions.

خلال المؤتمر الإقليمي، شكّلت زيارة كنيسة سانت أندروز في طنجة، وهي كنيسة أنغليكانية تتميّز بطابع معماري أندلسي، محطة بارزة للتأمل في تنوّع الحضور المسيحي في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا. فبعيدًا عن الاختلافات في الطقوس والعقائد، تتميّز كل طائفة مسيحية بخصوصيتها الثقافية التي تتجلّى في تقاليدها ولغاتها، وحتى في الطراز المعماري لكنائسها. وفي هذا الفضاء، حيث يلتقي الطابع المغربي الأندلسي بالتراث الأنغليكاني، يتجسّد هذا التنوّع بشكل واضح. كما أن حضور مشاركين من خلفيات متعددة، من بينهم مسيحيون موارنة وكلدان، أبرز أن هذا التعدّد لا يعكس انقسامًا، بل يُمثّل ثراءً حقيقيًا يُشكّل جزءًا أصيلًا من النسيج الديني والثقافي للمنطقة، ويؤكد أهمية صون تراث الأقليات.

Ahead of Yom HaShoah, we recognize that confronting the lessons of the Holocaust is a universal responsibility.

Last month in Morocco, جمعية ميمونة Association Mimouna organized a landmark Holocaust education conference, with AJC as a co-sponsor, bringing together educators from across the Middle East to confront hatred.

At a time of rising global antisemitism, efforts like this are essential. By presenting the Holocaust with both sensitivity and contemporary relevance, we can counter denial, challenge distortion, and foster a shared understanding of the devastating consequences of hate.
