An independent monitoring operation led by the Prometheus Institute for Democracy and Human Rights and the Civil Council Against All Forms of Discrimination has documented discriminatory practices affecting women during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The report, covering the period from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, found violations of dignity and equality, particularly targeting female supporters attending the tournament.
According to the findings, gender-based rhetoric was widely observed across digital platforms and media coverage. The report also highlighted the spread of AI-generated content aimed at undermining women's dignity and reinforcing harmful stereotypes.
Among the incidents cited were posts comparing Moroccan international Nayef Aguerd to a Moroccan fashion model, which researchers said reflected a pattern of ridicule and gendered mockery.
The monitoring groups further noted the use of discriminatory language by some media outlets and social media influencers. This included offensive remarks directed at athletes and the stereotyping of women supporters.
