The Moroccan National Tourism Office (ONMT) encourages all those who were planning trips to Marrakech to continue with their plans. The tourism sector in Marrakech continues to operate as normal and systems are in place to ensure visitors have a wonderful time in the city, despite the recent earthquake. Marrakech is heavily dependent on tourism for its income and, having only just recovered its tourist market following the pandemic, it needs people to continue to visit to support the livelihoods of the people who live there.

When tents are in short supply, it’s time to bring in the mobile homes… We are continually amazed at the incredible support Morocco is giving to the 300,000 people displaced by the recent earthquake in the Atlas mountains. These mobile homes were a gift from the Netherlands and will be a great help to many.

While the devastating earthquake which hit Morocco last week may not be the top news story any more, our friends in Morocco are making an incredible effort to gather shelter, beds, food and more to house and feed the 300,000 people who were made homeless by the earthquake. We will be supporting our friends at the Foyer de Jeune Filles in Marrakech to house some of the families from the mountain villages who no longer have homes.

REEP McLAREN SCHOLARSHIP

Britain – Spain -Morocco. Our three-way scholarship gives opportunities to young people who are interested in gardening, landscape design, history and cultural exchange. For two weeks in each country, a young Moroccan, Spaniard and Briton travel together to experience a focused aspect of gardening through visiting and working in historic gardens and other locations.

A developing reach

The idea is based on the Martin McLaren Memorial Scholarship founded in 1989, enabling gardeners from different countries to find out more about each other’s world. Originally focused on Europe, in 2016 we launched a programmed focused on gardening in the time of Shakespeare and its links with Morocco and Spain. Our three scholars spend time at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, Hever Castle, Castle Bromwich Hall Gardens and Cressing Temple Gardens. Round Two of the scholarship, in autumn 2018, found us in Marrakesh helping to create a recreational garden at a girls’ boarding house.
