Started in 2013, Le 18 is an independent creative platform and exhibition space promoting artistic and cultural exchange. We have two main objectives: Supporting emerging artists with research and residency programs, and making their projects known through exhibitions, presentations, and public gatherings. We also hope to connect the Marrakchi cultural landscape with various art scenes around the world by inviting international artists to work in Marrakech. Our approach is open and constantly evolving, allowing each intervention to contribute to the essential spirit of the space, which at the same time reinforces our commitment to fostering creativity. Situated in Riad Laarouss, an area in Marrakech's ancient medina, Le 18 not only offers (itself) a close proximity with the city's traditional way of life, but also draws its inspiration and raison d'être from its surroundings. We aim to bring the inspiring qualities of the medina into closer contact with the various approaches, practices, and reflections of invited artists.

An itinerant and immersive performance by Tunisian artist Ahmed Ben Attia, presented for the first time in Marrakech. Half dream, half ritual, the piece unfolds as a symbolic descent into darkness, guiding the audience through a journey between worlds — life and death, memory and oblivion, the sacred and its own undoing.

What begins as a simple ride becomes a passage between worlds — life and death, the sacred and the profane, the visible and the whispered. Through poetic fragments, visions, Quranic echoes, and cries of rebellion, Opus Nigrum unfolds as a dark meditation on transition, loss, and the possibility of faith in a time without God.
The project is supported by Junta de Andalucía et Ayuntamiento de Madrid.

⚡ARTIST IN RESIDENCE - LAURENCE MERLE

MIRAMAR RESIDENCY PROGRAM IN PARTNERSHIP WITH L’INSTITUT FRANÇAIS DU MAROC, BEAUX-ARTS DE MARSEILLE, DOS MARES

During her residency at LE 18, Laurence is developing a project with scientific, social, and ecological dimensions, extending alchemical research initiated with ceramist Olivier Zol. She explores the dialogue between ancestral techniques and resource ethics, from the still to a solar furnace. Collaborating with Hassan Chehouani, professor-researcher in optics and thermal energy, she experiments with capturing the sun through video and observes solar furnaces and GSM palm trees as sculptural tools.

Her practice revolves around video, ceramics and sculpture. Laurence questions through her work human behaviors and (mis)understandings, examining our use of material and intellectual resources through artisanal techniques such as still making, enameling, and aluminum casting.

Based between Toulon and Marseille, Laurence Merle earned a DNA from the Haute École des Arts du Rhin, completed training in forest management, and then earned a DNSEP from the École des Beaux-Arts de Marseille. She is a member of the Mastic collective in Marseille and is actively involved in the community life of the Metaxu Art Center in Toulon.

With Jenny Abouav

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2025
7:30 pm - Open Studio
8:00 pm - Performance
At LE 18

Jenny Abouav invites us to discover the work she developed in situ during her residency at LE 18. Her in-depth research and experiments around gestures, sound, and materials have unfolded into sculptures and a performance that pulses with the ecological tensions of soil and climate.

Abouav’s work explores the fragile dialogue between body and landscape: cracked earth mirrors cracked skin, while rammed earth, winds, light, and stone act as co-performers. Using honeycomb kraft paper, she investigates how matter holds memory, echoing desert terrains between M’Hamid and Ouarzazat.

Join us for a unique evening starting with the Open Studio at 7:30 pm followed by the Performance at 8:00 pm and ending at 8:45 pm.

⚡️BIENAL DE SÃO PAULO × LAILA HIDA

Laila Hida is participating in the 36th Sao Paulo Biennale (), titled “Not All Travellers Walk Roads–Of Humanity as Practice.” The biennial, which takes its title from the poem ‘Da calma e do silêncio’ (Of calm and silence) by Afrobrazilian poet Conceição Evaristo, will examine how humans understand and engage with each other. The 36th Bienal de São Paulo will take place from September 6, 2025, to January 11, 2026, at the Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion.

Laila Hida will present Sange Khara, a new video installation and chapter of her long-form project Le Voyage du Phoenix. The project excavates the constructed imaginaries of the oasis from colonial travel writing and orientalist cinema to contemporary tourism, speculative landscaping, and urban ornamentation. Through image, sound, and spatial assemblage, it traces the sedimented layers of myth, desire, and appropriation embedded in this replicated and aestheticized territory.

This edition is curated by Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung (), supported by Alya Sebti (), Anna Roberta Goetz (), Thiago de Paula Souza, Keyna Eleison () and Henriette Gallus.

TAKHAMT means shelter in Tamazight, the mother tongue of Moroccan nomads.

This project is a collaboration of Dutch Textile Artist Janneke Raaphorst with Malika Eloualy Moroccan artist/researcher focused on nomad culture.

Janneke and Malika engaged in workshops with Les Mamans Douées, facilitated by Dar Bellarj/ Fondation Susanna Biedermann. These workshops focused on female empowerment through crafting. The Gifted Mothers who participated created a library of their personal stories, crafted into textile booklets and they collaborated on assembling a tent as a safe space for sharing stories.

This tent is made by assembling several rugs, each of which has a story to tell, and comes from a house or region.

Janneke Raaphorst is an artist and designer from the Netherlands. As a textile wizard she works with sourcing material and its stories, embodiment through craft and infusing experience with meaning through ritual and storytelling. 💧🪄 GRAPH(ECO)LOGY - Graphic Design Month
1ˢᵗ Edition Programme [Herrek L’ma Yban L’aatshan!]*

At KIOSK Tangier
15.07 — 03.08 2025

Graph(eco)logy is a month-long project that opens a time-space to explore graphic design as a language of reflection and inquiry. It seeks to challenge and disrupt the conventional framing of design as merely a commercial tool, particularly within SWANA contexts and more broadly within global discourse.

For this first edition, we drew from the Moroccan proverb: “Herrek L’ma Yban L’aatshan”
Literally: “Stir the water, and the thirsty will appear”*. This saying became both a metaphor and a call, emerging from a shared urgency to confront the tension between our roles as creative thinkers and our position as tools for ex*****on.

Featuring Ali T. As'ad, Fatima-Ezzahra El Khammas, Hicham Bouzid, Kimiā Collective, Kwamé Omari, Naïma Ben Ayed, Sarah Saleh, Sophia Alami, and Yvon Langué.

Graph(eco)logy is a project jointly organised by Think Tangier and LE 18 Marrakech.

Curation and Graphic Design by Meryem Fekhari and Kamal Daghmoumi .
