Started in 2013, Le 18 is an independent creative platform and exhibition space promoting artistic and cultural exchange. We have two main objectives: Supporting emerging artists with research and residency programs, and making their projects known through exhibitions, presentations, and public gatherings. We also hope to connect the Marrakchi cultural landscape with various art scenes around the world by inviting international artists to work in Marrakech. Our approach is open and constantly evolving, allowing each intervention to contribute to the essential spirit of the space, which at the same time reinforces our commitment to fostering creativity. Situated in Riad Laarouss, an area in Marrakech's ancient medina, Le 18 not only offers (itself) a close proximity with the city's traditional way of life, but also draws its inspiration and raison d'être from its surroundings. We aim to bring the inspiring qualities of the medina into closer contact with the various approaches, practices, and reflections of invited artists.

Songs of Opacity // أناشيد العتامة // ⵉⵣⵍⴰⵏ ⵏ ⵜⴰⵍⵍⴰⵙⵜ

23 - 25 July 2026
At LE 18

Entitled Songs of Opacity, this second iteration of the Complicity and Conspiracy in Film Translation program follows the program's first edition in Beirut in March 2025. It suggests the audio-visual medium as a space that can host the complex and nuanced interactions between the oral and the written. Rather than providing an unquestioned access to another language, the films in this edition focus the subtitle as a threshold of connection and meaning in unusual and unexpected ways.

This program is curated by Nour Ouayda in collaboration with LE 18 and Omar Berrada and is realized in the framework of NAAS’ curatorial fellowship 2025-2026.

EXHIBITION OPENING
Thursday, 23ʳᵈ July 2026

6pm - 9pm
at LE 18 Marrakech

23.07 – 30.07.2026

“Tifinagh on Screen” is more than just a title; it is a statement of presence. The emergence of the first Amazigh film in 1991 was not a mere cinematic experiment, but a historic moment in which the region’s most ancient script became intertwined with the motion of image and sound. This exhibition, arising from an in-depth research project on “Reclaiming Archives as Counter-History” funded by NAAS (Network of Arab Alternative Screens), traces the fragile yet persistent trajectory of this cinema: born from individual initiatives, far from institutional support, yet able to carve out its own audience and memory.

From early films like “Tamghart Ourgh” to contemporary productions, the exhibition presents visual, audio, and textual documents that have long remained in the shadows. It pays tribute to the efforts of producers, directors, actors, and screenwriters whose work constitutes an essential chapter in Morocco’s cinematic and cultural history. Through posters, photographs, VHS and VCD covers, and never-before-seen archival materials, “Tifinagh on Screen” tells the story of cultural resistance and identity affirmation.

The exhibition also explores the production and distribution conditions of this parallel cinema, its technological evolution, the role of audiences and associations in its sustainability, and the current challenges it faces. It affirms that a Morocco open to itself is one that embraces the diversity of its cultures, without hierarchy among languages and memories, and that this diversity is an inexhaustible source of collective wealth.

WORKSHOP PRESENTATION
Saturday, 23ʳᵈ May 2026
6 pm at Dar Bellarj

LE 18 in collaboration with Dar Bellarj, as part of Mai de la Photo, present the results of Mokhtabar, a 3-day film development workshop with Salaheddine Elbouaaichi and Yassine Sellam. Mokhtabar is an invitation to the youth of Dar Bellarj to explore their environment through a sensitive and attentive approach to image, while experimenting with film photography mediums and developing an observant eye toward places, people and everyday gestures. What emerged is a body of work that traces their surroundings, personal memories and the places where the two meet, building together a collective memory on the trajectory between LE 18 and Dar Bellarj.

PUBLIC PROGRAM

Friday, 22ⁿᵈ May 2026
7.30 pm at LE 18
↳ Zine Launch

From zine to exhibition. Join us in a conversation with Hiba Dahibi around her project Home Away From Home, the conversation will move through format as a question of proximity: how the passage from zine to exhibition changes not just the scale of the work but also our relationship to it. Home Away From Home was born as a zine during Hiba’s residency in Marseille, a project that traces a photographic wandering through grief, between sorrow, memory, and the present. Like an autofiction, it weaves together fragments of images and text without seeking a narrative, but holding onto what resists coherence.

Hiba Dahibi (b. 2001, Rabat) is a Moroccan photographer and filmmaker based in Salé. Her practice constructs personal and poetic narratives of place, memory, and belonging. Evolving from landscape photography into experimental essay work, she often tells human stories through absence, traces, textures, and spaces becoming carriers of memory. Her images explore immobility as a form of resistance to acceleration, remaining attentive to silence, light, and the subtle interactions between bodies and their environments.

Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions at the Mohammed VI Foundation for Education in Rabat, the National Museum of Photography in Rabat, and the 1-54 art fair. She participated in the DABAPHOTO 6 festival at LE 18 Marrakech. In 2025 she completed a residency at La Friche Belle de Mai in Marseille.

OPENING
Saturday, 16ᵗʰ May 2026
4 pm at LE 18

In this project, Hiba Dahibi takes us on a poignant photographic journey into the heart of mourning: how do we go on living with grief, memories, and the present? On her second foray into the exhibition format, her work combines fragments of photographic and textual memories that first took shape as a zine during her residency in Marseille last spring.

This autofictional form, it is all about this fragile balance, the tension between distance and closeness, the feelings, memories of what we want to keep as well as what we are trying to abandon. Familiar places become painful places, while the elsewhere becomes a land of welcome.

What emerges are bits and pieces: moments, textures and absences. A kind of emotional residue that needs no complete story to exist, where coherence is deliberately fractured to evoke the instability of memory.
