Today is International Youth Day!
Every year on 12 August, the world commemorates International Youth Day, established by the United Nations in 1999 to recognize the vital role young people play in advancing sustainable development and to promote their meaningful participation in society. The 2026 theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” reminds us that although young people live under vastly different social, economic, and cultural circumstances, they share common aspirations: quality education, decent work, good health, meaningful participation, and the opportunity to shape a better future for themselves and their communities.
At the Youth Alliance for Leadership and Development in Africa (YALDA), we believe that empowering young people begins with listening to their realities and equipping them with the leadership, skills, networks, and opportunities needed to thrive. Through capacity building, policy dialogue, mentorship, and continental collaboration, YALDA continues to position African youth as innovators, problem-solvers, and partners in sustainable development.
