Our cities are growing faster than ever, but are they growing better?
Our Five Principles of Sustainable Neighbourhood Planning provide the foundation for a resilient, inclusive, and vibrant urban future.
From the hills of Medellín to the bustling streets of Nairobi, here is how we build the neighbourhoods of tomorrow, today:
1. Streets for people, not just cars
Interconnected, safe, and accessible street networks are the lungs of a city. They facilitate walking, cycling, and universal access, reducing the "last mile" connectivity gap.
2. The power of density
We need high-density urban growth (at least 15,000 people per km²) to stop urban sprawl.
3. Mix it up! (land Use)
Why commute for hours? Integrating residential, commercial, and recreational spaces means daily necessities are
just a 5-minute walk away.
4. Diverse homes, diverse voices
Inclusive cities require a variety of housing types and plot sizes.
5. Live local, work local
Supporting local production and consumption reduces "food miles" and dependency on long supply chains.
By integrating nature-based solutions and multi-modal housing and transportation systems, these principles aim to build resilient communities capable of withstanding climate stressors while maintaining a unique local identity.
Bottom line: well-planned urbanization is a transformative force. Let’s move from spatially fragmented blocks to compact, connected, and inclusive communities.
