🪘🪘THE SEPARATE REPRESENTATION OF VOTERS ACT🪘🪘

The Separate Representation of Voters Act of 1951 in South Africa, was a pivotal piece of legislation in South Africa's apartheid regime, designed to systematically disenfranchise Coloured voters. This act exemplified the racist policies of the time, stripping Coloured citizens of their basic democratic rights.

The act placed Coloured voters on a separate electoral roll, but with significant limitations. They could only vote for white candidates who were already nominated by white parties or individuals. This meant Coloured voters had limited choice, these white representatives didn't necessarily advocate for Coloured interests, and it reduced Coloured voters' influence in elections.

This system was a deliberate tactic to maintain white dominance while appearing to give some representation to Coloured people. It was a cruel irony that those who were meant to represent Coloured interests were chosen by the very group that sought to oppress them.

🪘🪘GAMBIA TAKES MYANMAR TO ICJ OVER ROHINGYA ATROCITIES 🪘🪘

The International Court of Justice has started hearing a case brought by Gambia against Myanmar. Gambia says Myanmar committed genocide against the Rohingya, a Muslim minority group, in 2017. Over 730,000 Rohingya people were forced to flee to Bangladesh.

Gambia's Justice Minister, Dawda Jallow, says Myanmar's actions were meant to erase the Rohingya as a unique ethnic and religious group. The allegations include mass killings, sexual violence, and destruction of communities.

The court hearings will last three weeks. The outcome could affect other cases, including one against Israel.

Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh are hoping for justice. A final decision may take years, but it could help hold countries accountable for human rights abuses.

🪘🪘 GOVERNMENT OF GHANA SWIFTLY INTERVENE TO ADDRESS NURSES' CONCERNS 🪘🪘

The Ghanaian government has sprung into action to resolve the salary arrears issue affecting 6,500 nurses and midwives who were employed just before the previous administration left office. The Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives had taken to the streets of Accra on October 2 to demand immediate payment of their 10 months' salary arrears.

The Ministries of Health and Finance have joined forces to address the issue, with Deputy Finance Minister Thompson Nyarko Apem assuring the nurses that their grievances would be conveyed to Ghana's Finance Minister, Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson. Hon. Apem emphasized that the government is working to resolve the issue and promised that the nurses would receive their salaries.

Ghana's Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh noted that 8,000 out of 13,500 recruited nurses and midwives have already been processed and are receiving their salaries, with the remaining 6,500 being attended to. The government has pledged to include the unpaid salaries in the 2026 budget, providing hope for the affected nurses and midwives who are struggling financially.

The government has demonstrated its commitment to resolving the issue, with the Ministries of Health and Finance working closely together to ensure the nurses and midwives receive their salaries. The coalition has demanded a clear timeline for payment, explanation for the delay, and transparency in the payment process, which the government is working to address.
