💬 “In Latvia, we often see the slogan “Mana Latvija. Mana atbildība” (“My Latvia. My responsibility”), introduced in 2024 by the Latvian National Guard to promote broader public engagement and resilience. The essence of this guiding idea is simple: the security and future of the state are not only the responsibility of government institutions or the military, but of society as a whole. It is a message that should have wider resonance in Denmark as well,” write Major General Jette Albinus and our director Anna Enemark in a joint article on Delfi.lv.

🇩🇰🇱🇻 Recently, our director Anna Enemark had the pleasure to meet with Lieutenant Colonel Ruta Mūrniece, Head of the Communications Directorate at Latvia’s National Guard Headquarters. It was inspiring to learn more about their work in resilience and the development of the motto that has become widely recognized across Latvia as an expression of unity and shared responsibility.
Thank you for the warm welcome, Zemessardze!

💬 “This is why we - a Major General and a cultural sector expert - stand shoulder to shoulder. The boundary between our worlds is no longer as clear as it once was. Although we work in different fields, we are ultimately striving for the same goal: a world defined by peace, freedom, and democracy.”

In a joint article for Delfi.lv, Major General Jette Albinus and our director Anna Enemark reflect on the role of culture in security and societal resilience - and on what Denmark can learn from Latvia.

“Lai gan strādājam katra savā jomā – viena militārajā aizsardzībā, bet otra mākslā un kultūrā –, aizvien biežāk saskaramies ar to, ka mūsu darbības sfēras ir jāuzlūko caur vienu un to pašu prizmu – drošību”.

🕊️It is with deep sadness that we have learned of the passing of Simon Drewsen Holmberg. Simon served as Director of the Danish Cultural Institute in the Baltic States for 18 years, from 2005 to 2023. During his time at DCI, he built a remarkable legacy of projects, events and partnerships that demonstrated the power of culture to strengthen dialogue, understanding, and cooperation across borders.

He played a central role in developing close cultural ties between Denmark and the Baltic countries, and today, we continue to build on Simon’s legacy. He redefined what a cultural institute could be and helped create many of the strong partnerships that remain invaluable to us today.

Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

🇩🇰 🇺🇦 🇱🇹 On 20 May, the exhibition "That flower looks like a drone" opens at Lietuvos nacionalinis muziejus, supported by the Danish Cultural Institute in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania🌼

The art pieces in the exhibition were created during painting workshops in Kyiv organised by Danish artist Eske Touborg for Ukrainian children liberated from Russian-occupied territories.

The works are a combination of the children’s playful and vividly painted backgrounds and Touborg's blurred portraits of the children. The result is a striking contrast between the children’s erased identities, shaped by years of Russian indoctrination, and the childhood that is inevitably pushed into the background as a consequence.

💬 The name of the exhibition - "That flower looks like a drone" – comes from words spoken by one of the children, talking about the flower they had painted.

📍 The exhibition will run until 6 September.

NAUJA PARODA „Ta gėlė atrodo kaip dronas“! 🌼

📚We had the pleasure of co-hosting the event “A Year with Denmark: The World of Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales” in collaboration with Lietuvos nacionalinė Martyno Mažvydo biblioteka, the Embassy of Denmark in Lithuania, and H.C. Andersens Hus.

The day began with opening speeches by the Director of the Library Aušrinė Žilinskienė and the Danish Ambassador to Lithuania Grete Sillasen, after which workshops opened throughout the building.

We shared the story of H.C. Andersen and his paper cuttings, and introduced gækkebreve along with rhymes in Danish, English, and Lithuanian. ❄️✂️

A special thank you to Pia Lindegaard Nielsen from H.C. Andersen’s House and Ekaterina Solholm Jensen from DCI for facilitating the workshop.

In March and April, we were pleased to join a series of events across the Baltics marking 35 years of Nordic–Baltic cooperation together with our valued partners Šiaurės ministrų tarybos biuras Lietuvoje, Ziemeļvalstu Ministru padomes birojs Latvijā, and Põhjamaade Ministrite Nõukogu esindus Eestis. 🤝

In Tallinn 🇪🇪, we joined the Nordic Day seminar “Nordic-Baltic Cooperation – 35 Years, Achievements and the Way Ahead,” where discussions reflected on the partnership’s role in strengthening regional resilience since the restoration of Baltic independence.🛡️

In Vilnius 🇱🇹, the conference “Shared Values, Shared Security: The Nordic–Baltic Partnership at 35 and the Path Forward” brought together policymakers, researchers, and cultural actors to discuss cooperation in today’s geopolitical landscape and the strong ties connecting our societies through culture, security, innovation, and shared democratic values.

In Riga 🇱🇻, we were delighted to celebrate alongside the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Latvia with the opening of the exhibition “KAAVIIAARNEQ° CIKLS” by Greenlandic-Latvian artist Bolatta Silis-Høegh and an exhibition tracing the history of Nordic–Baltic cooperation. 🖼️

Congratulations to the The Nordic Council of Ministers and its Baltic offices on their 35th anniversary - we look forward to continuing our strong cooperation in the years ahead.👏
