We are delighted to welcome Ernest Sabine to the residency in October!

Ernest Sabine is a Latvian-American artist based in New York City whose work explores memory, displacement, and the quiet dialogue between nature and personal history. Working intuitively with painting and natural materials, he reconstructs inherited narratives into contemporary forms. His practice moves fluidly between abstraction and recollection, guided by a natural, instinctive process that lets the work unfold.

During his time in Kuldīga, Ernest Sabine will develop “Between Two Breaths”, an installation of paintings, printed fragments, and mixed-media works. The project explores memory as both personal and inherited, tracing how fragments of the past are carried across people, places, and generations and continue to surface in the present.

During her residency at Studija, Melanie Holland began exploring the idea of “homes away from home”, but her time in Kuldīga unexpectedly led her towards the ongoing discussions around the sculptures in the 1905 Park.

Moved by the Memorial Wall for the Victims of 1919 and a ceremony held in its honour, Melanie created two collage works, "1919–2026: 1" and "1919–2026: 2", as a personal response to the sculptures and the histories they represent.

Working with collage, Gelli prints, local materials and imagery, she reimagined the figures through a palette inspired by Latvia – red, amber, ochre and stone grey – while exploring themes of memory, mourning and care.

During her stay, Melanie also held Gelli printing workshops with local art students.

Thank you, Melanie, for your time at Studija! 🤍

Iepazīsti izstādē “Es un Līvija” aplūkojamos darbus un to autores! 🪲

Inga Meldere

We are delighted to welcome Melanie Holland to the Studija Residency in September!

Melanie Holland is a collage artist and printmaker whose work explores the beautiful unease of the in-between. Her collages and prints lean into history, religion and folktales, and the pairing of the familiar and uncanny. She is interested in the intersections between memory and nostalgia, and loves the unusual connections that emerge when images are pieced together.

During her residency in Kuldīga, she will be exploring “homes away from home” – the sense of belonging (or not) in the physical places we occupy, and the larger idea of what “home” means in liminal spaces and time. Melanie is based in Charlottesville, Virginia, in the US.

Pasākuma noslēgumā māksliniece no Kuldīgas – Ilze Vanaga Ilze Vanaga – paredz uzņemt visu klātesošo dalībnieku portretus 1905. gada parka teritorijā, tādējādi iemūžinot cilvēkus un parku pirms tā pārmaiņām.

Laiks: sākot no plkst. 16.00
Vieta: 1905. gada parks, sākums pie 1905. gada pieminekļa
Dalība: bez maksas
Pasākums norisināsies latviešu un angļu valodā

A look back at Ilga Leimanis’ residency at Studija, where she spent a month in Kuldīga developing a body of drawings, watercolours and writing around time, longing and potential.

Beginning with observational drawings of Līvija Rezevska’s “Ilgas” (1978) – a vulnerable, upward-looking woman whose name, meaning “longing”, echoes Ilga’s own – Ilga began exploring questions of duration, memory and the blurred boundaries between past, present and future.

The residency also offered an opportunity to reconnect with her Kurzeme roots, retracing family steps through Nīca, Bernāti and Liepāja. Alongside this personal connection to place and memory, Ilga’s research brought together her longstanding interest in the “bloom space” of affect and diagrammatic language with Latvian ornaments and signs, as well as ideas of more-than-human, cyclical and emergent futures.

Through drawing, writing and thinking, Ilga asked what a distinctly Latvian sense of time might reveal: a space of longing, relation and possibility, still in the process of becoming.

Thank you, Ilga, for bringing your questions, observations and research into the space at Studija!

We are delighted to welcome Joanna Wróblewska to the Studija Residency from late August into September!

Joanna Wróblewska is a visual artist and expressive arts therapist working between Poland and Belgium. She holds an MA in Intermedia Graphic Design, a PhD in Visual Arts, and an MA in Expressive Arts Therapy with a Minor in Psychology. Joanna works primarily with individuals who have experienced migration in any form, as well as those searching for a sense of belonging. Her practice is rooted in gentle, trauma-informed, and cross-cultural approaches that weave together various art-based tools, somatic awareness, guided imagery, and deep relaxation techniques.

Joanna’s creative and therapeutic work is deeply inspired by the natural world, especially the quiet presence of greenery and forests. Through her connection with nature, she finds both artistic expression and the capacity to hold restorative, compassionate spaces for people navigating cultural transitions, loneliness, guilt, doubt, sadness, and the many emotions that accompany moments of change and transformation.

During her residency at Studija, Joanna will develop the project “Twilight Forms of Migration”, which explores migration not only as the movement of people from one place to another, but also as a more personal experience of leaving, arriving, belonging, feeling like an outsider, adapting, and changing. Through storytelling, movement, sound, visual expression, and other creative exercises, the project will explore the stories of Kuldīga, looking at familiar stories and experiences from new perspectives.

Join three creative sessions led by Joanna Wróblewska, an art therapist and visual artist, during her residency at Studija this August and September!

During her residency, Joanna will develop “Twilight Forms of Migration”, a project that approaches migration not only as the movement from one place to another, but also as a personal experience of leaving, arriving, adapting, changing, belonging — or feeling like an outsider.

As part of the project, Joanna would like to spend time with people in Kuldīga and explore the stories of the city together. Participants will be invited to work with storytelling, movement, sound, visual expression and other creative exercises, looking at familiar stories and experiences from new perspectives. The sessions are intended as open, exploratory artistic encounters — a space to share, listen, experiment and discover different ways of expressing stories that might otherwise remain unseen or unheard.
