Information is the primary requirement for independence. Here are some books that challenge perspectives, celebrate accessibility, and amplify disabled voices.
This shelf highlights powerful stories of resilience, activism, identity, and innovation:

šŸ“– Haben by Haben Girma
šŸ“– Being Heumann by Judith Heumann
šŸ“– Disability Visibility (YA Edition) by Alice Wong

These books remind us that disability is not something to ā€œfixā€, but it’s a vital part of human diversity, creativity, and social change 🧿

We would be grateful if you explored this topic further through these books!šŸ’™

Šis grāmatu plaukts izceļ spēcīgus stāstus par izturību, aktīvismu, identitāti un inovācijām:

šŸ“– Haben — Haben Girma
šŸ“– Being Heumann — Judith Heumann
šŸ“– Disability Visibility (YA Edition) — Alice Wong

Å Ä«s grāmatas atgādina, ka invaliditāte nav kaut kas, ko vajadzētu ā€œizlabotā€, bet gan bÅ«tiska cilvēku daudzveidÄ«bas, radoÅ”uma un sociālo pārmaiņu daļa 🧿

On Saturday, participants from the European School of Luxembourg I, Riga French Lyceum, and Riga Secondary School No. 9 reunited for the final day of DemocraSee.
Ā
At , they stepped into the shoes of Members of the European Parliament through an interactive roleplay, debating the Online Participation Directive and the Climate-Friendly Food Directive while gaining insight into how the Parliament works from the inside.
Ā
After lunch, the group explored Luxembourg City, discovering how accessibility is integrated into urban design – from tactile paths and adapted curbs to audio and vibrating traffic lights. Small details that make a big difference.
Ā
The day concluded in Walferdange at the Centre Culturel Prince Henri, where participants completed their self-assessments and received their certificates. It was also a moment to reflect, and to look ahead, as coordinators encouraged the continuation of the project beyond its official end.
Ā
Now we can truly say - DemocraSee - See it! Feel it! Be it!

On Friday, students from the Riga French Lyceum (Rīgas Franču licejs), the Riga Secondary school number 9 (Rīgas 9.vidusskola) and the European school of Luxembourg 1 came together in Luxembourg for a strong and impactful day.
Ā
During the first part of the day, participants participated in the panel discussion ā€œFeel your Voteā€ where they welcomed from in the , Māris Zviedris from and Lars Bosselmann from the European Blind Union. Together, they explored what is being done by each institution to achieve accessible elections and presented some of the possible solutions prepared by the participants of the project.
Ā
In the afternoon, participants went back to the European School of Luxembourg 1 where they took part in a Model United Nations and Model European Parliament style resolution drafting. Participants actively engaged in analyzing the panel discussion before preparing Introductory Clauses and developing Operative clauses calling all institutions to action. The plenary session of the activity was full of amendments and debates to make sure that the resolution is passed in the most complete form possible. Resolution that passed with a 100% approval rate.
Ā
Ā
Afterwards, participants took on the streets of Luxembourg to enjoy some succulent comfort foods and celebrating the approval of the resolution.
Ā
A big thank you to for supporting this day and making the Panel Discussion happen!

On Thursday, students from Riga Secondary School No. 9, Riga French LycƩe, and European School of Luxembourg I came together in the Old Town of Luxembourg, ready for an active and engaging morning.

Participants gathered for our first activity, ā€œThe Way to Vote.ā€ We were divided into three groups and assigned specific roles: one Walker for each route, three Guide Partners to support the walkers, and the remaining participants formed the Observation Team. The aim of this activity was to better understand the challenges faced by people with visual impairments by navigating through the Old Town of Luxembourg on the way to the Ministry of Education. Through this experience, participants developed teamwork skills, strengthened communication, and gained valuable insight into the importance of accessible infrastructure in urban environments.

The next activity was the ā€œThink Tank.ā€ During this session, participants revisited ideas and potential solutions from our debate earlier in the week and worked on developing them further. They explored practical ways to bring these ideas to life by considering factors such as costs, legislation, and implementation strategies. This activity encouraged creativity, problem-solving, and innovation, while also helping participants improve their entrepreneurial competences.

We concluded this productive and energetic day with a short debriefing session, where everyone had the opportunity to reflect on the day’s experiences and key lessons learned, before enjoying dinner together at the Big Beer Company.

Wednesday, students from Riga Secondary School No. 9, the Riga French LycƩe, and the European School of Luxembourg I gathered at the Court of Justice of the European Union. Participants were in high spirits after being guided through the astonishing building by Mrs. M. Archilla, Administrator in the Directorate for Human Resources at the Court of Justice of the European Union.
Then, we met Christopher Fretwell, who works to improve the digital accessibility of the Curia website; Mateo Caballero Peralta, who focuses on making the InfoCuria search engine more accessible; and Sébastien Servais, who uses technology to advance accessibility solutions. We also had the opportunity to meet Enrique Bercero and Silvia Verdú Relano, who introduced us to the pilot traineeship programme for people with disabilities. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to all of the professionals who dedicated their time to meeting with us, sharing their expertise, and inspiring us through their commitment to accessibility and inclusion. Their generosity and openness made this experience especially meaningful and memorable for all participants.
Furthermore, we met with Mrs. I. Reine, a Judge at the General Court of the European Union, and took part in a spontaneous and engaging dialogue through which the participants gained valuable insight into the field of interpretation.
During lunch, the students were divided into two groups, one of which conducted interviews to assess how informed people were about our topic, otherwise known as ā€œinclusive democracy.ā€
After enjoying a delicious lunch, the students went to the European School of Luxembourg I to continue our activities. We began with ā€œAccessibility Mapping of Polling Stations,ā€ where the participants recreated polling stations with the aim of making them as accessible as possible.
After our final activity, we had a brief debriefing session before going to enjoy dinner at Basta Cosi.

Monday, we, students from Riga Secondary School No. 9, the Riga French LycƩe, and the European School of Luxembourg I, worked productively at the European School of Luxembourg I.

Before our activities, we received thoughtful goodie bags from the European Court. They were filled with useful items such as highlighters, pens, and other essentials that we’ll definitely be using throughout the week.

We started with an ā€œAccessibility Timelineā€ session, where we learned about the history of blindness and how perceptions and support systems have evolved over time. After that, we explored the critical ā€œLaw vs. Realityā€ dynamic, discussing how inclusion works in practice. Lastly, we had a fiery debate about the gap between legal frameworks and the real-life experiences of people with disabilities.

After our activities at the school, we went to visit the European Parliament, where we gained firsthand insight into how EU institutions operate.

There are many ways to support blind and partially sighted people both digitally and personally:
Be My Eyes
One of the people from Latvijas Neredzīgo biedrība, Pēteris Locāns, told us about an app, that is really useful but not so popular in Latvia. Be My Eyes is a free app that connects blind and low-vision users with sighted volunteers via live video call. If someone needs help reading a label, checking an expiry date, or, for example, navigating an unfamiliar place, a volunteer answers and helps them. Simple help, but genuinely useful.

Apeirons
Apeirons regularly organizes events, such as educational sessions, inclusive activities, and community gatherings, where people can meet and learn from each other. Keep an eye on their calendar at https://www.apeirons.lv/kateogorija/pasakumi/
Latvijas Neredzīgo biedrība (Latvian Blind Association)
Their organisation welcomes volunteers for all kinds of tasks: helping organize cultural events,
recording the journal Rosme in audio format,
driving blind individuals to appointments (if you have a license),
assisting with repairs,
and helping tidy up the surroundings
or simply helping with everyday tasks.
Definitely check their website to find out more and contact them!

Do you know how a person who cannot see votes in elections in Latvia?

Some facts worth knowing:
• Blind people have the right to vote – the CVK provides trusted assistants and assistive tools.
• However, stencils are not always available. If not – the vote is not fully secret.
• A blind person is usually dependent on an assistant they must trust.
• Poland, Estonia, Kosovo – they have already found solutions. In Latvia this discussion is still ongoing.
• The EU and UN guarantee accessible elections. Latvia formally – yes. In practice – not always.

Democracy is not just rights. It is the ability to exercise them.
__________________________
