The new EU driving license directive

At the beginning of the year, discussions were still ongoing about whether and to what extent the directive would be updated. Topics that were considered questionable or difficult were discussed. Now, however, the European Parliament has finally decided what the directive will entail.

Two traffic offences mean two driving bans

As the headline suggests, this is a real case that the Frankfurt am Main District Court had to deal with. A driver failed to maintain the required minimum distance from the vehicle. Shortly before that, he had been caught with a presumably similar value at the same location, and administrative offence proceedings had also been initiated against him. The Higher Regional Coute imposed the same penalty again.

Animals as luggage?

The European Court of Justice recently dealt with a case involving an animal, concerning a claim for damages following the loss of a dog (case number C-218/24). The plaintiff was about to board a flight with her dog, but due to its size, it was only permitted to travel in the cargo hold. This meant that, like luggage, the animal had to be checked in separately and loaded onto the plane by designated staff. During this process, however, the dog escaped from its transport crate and could not be recaptured.

Is autonomous driving coming to Germany?
There is currently a lot of discussion about cars at European and national levels. The focus is on supporting the automotive industry, which is to be achieved through initiatives such as promoting autonomous driving and introducing an obligation for petrol stations to install charging stations, making charging as easy as refuelling. In addition, a new package to promote electric mobility is set to be launched.

Do speed cameras serve road safety or are they a source of revenue?

Speed cameras, whether mobile or permanently installed, are used throughout Germany, with a total of 6,200 cameras regularly located in cities. This includes 4,756 fixed cameras, 937 mobile devices, and 479 trailers. While the motivation behind this is somewhat controversial, one aspect is certainly the desire to prevent traffic accidents. But which city is leading the way?

New case before the ECJ: Trailer manufacturers disagree with new CO2 regulations

The EU regulation, which came into force on 1 July last year for truck trailer manufacturers, stipulates a number of mandatory measures that appear to be unrealistic to implement. Companies see this as a threat to their existence. This is because penalties could be imposed from 2030 onwards that could increase the purchase price of a trailer by up to 40%.
