We had the chance to bring seven Jonk Fuerscher with us to get an exclusive visit to the Google headquarters in Paris, France.

Earlier this week, a group of young scientists got an exclusive look inside Google’s Paris offices. Guided by two Googlers, they explored the building’s workspaces and cafeterias, got a real sense of what daily life at one of the world’s biggest tech companies looks like and even had a peek into the YouTube studios.

The highlight of the whole day however, was the round table with team members from Google.org and a software engineer, where our Jonk Fuerscher had the chance to ask questions and dig into a genuine conversation about tech, careers and what it takes to work at Google.

A big thank you to our hosts and Mélanie Le Bihan for making this visit possible!

🥇 Gold at IMSEF 2026: Our Jonk Fuerscher did it again!

Competing against 236 projects from 17 countries in Izmir, Shaheen Aljourdi, Rodrigo Von Mayer Goulart, and Yigit Günes took home the top prize in their category with AURA, a smart wearable bracelet that combines UV monitoring, electrical impedance spectroscopy, and on-device AI to help detect skin cancer early.

But this win didn't come out of nowhere. In 2025, the team represented Luxembourg at EUCYS in Riga, one of Europe's most prestigious youth science competitions. Months later, they were in Tamaulipas, Mexico for ExpoCiencias Nacional 2025, where they earned a bronze medal. Their research also caught the attention of the Fondation Cancer Luxembourg, which awarded them a €1,251 grant, the first under a new FJSL partnership dedicated to supporting youth-led cancer research.
Now, a Gold Medal at IMSEF ().

Rodrigo puts it best:
"After all the time we spent designing, building, testing, and improving AURA, presenting it at IMSEF made us realize how far we've come. For the first time, it truly feels like we're ready to take the final steps and turn AURA into something that can have a real impact on people's lives."

This is exactly why we do what we do, giving young researchers in Luxembourg the platform, the exposure, and the network to develop their ideas not just over months, but over years.

Congratulations, team. The future of AURA looks bright. ✨

They are back from Toulouse!

Three Jonk Fuerscher showed off their projects at CIRASTI Exposciences en Occitanie () in Toulouse, where they spent a full week filled with cultural excursions and visits as well as meeting youth from all over. In collaboration with mobisciences, this trip not only offers an insight into our yearly Science Expo but opens many doors for their future.

"This trip helped me learn so much and meet some incredible people. Our supervisors made the experience a hundred times better by making everything go as smoothly as possible and the week is something that I will never forget. I loved every part of it and I wish everyone that took part in the journey the best of luck!" – Meghana

🔬Our Jonk Fuerscher are on their way to GeniUS Olympiad () in New York for the upcoming week. Two Jonk Fuerscher Raluca and Kiara will be presenting their project ‘Effect of Water Pollution on Algae Growth.’

Their project investigated the effect of two algaecides, copper sulphate and liquid dish detergent, on the growth of Chlorella vulgaris. Interestingly, low doses of both substances actually promoted algal growth, a phenomenon known as hormesis. At higher concentrations, however, growth was clearly inhibited. A great example of how the line between nutrient and toxin can be surprisingly thin!

The project was submitted at the National Jonk Fuerscher Contest 2026, where it earned Raluca and Kiara a place at ISEF.

🗺️ We'll be sharing updates throughout the week – stay tuned!

🏅🇱🇺 Congrats to seven Jonk Fuerscher who represented Luxembourg with their six projects amongst which two won a honourable mention at the Mostra Nacional de Ciência in Porto! Beyond the competition, the students participated in a rich cultural program, connecting with peers from all over the world.

“I had an amazing time at the Mostra Nacional de Ciência and Mobisciences Program in Porto. For 5 days, we participated in a wide variety of cultural and science activities. The others in the Luxembourgish delegation were very motivated as well and we quickly got along well. We met other young scientists from Brasil, Belgium, Tunisia, Morocco, Spain, Italy and of course Portugal and had many interesting visits and talks. My favourite part of the event was the international evening, during which we represented Luxembourg and even performed a luxembourgish dance.” - Alexandra S., Jonk Fuerscher at the contest.

🔬Three Jonk Fuerscher are off to 1923 IMSEF Mathematics, Science and Engineering Fair Izmir () in Türkiye for the upcoming week where they will compete with a project first presented at the National Jonk Fuerscher Contest 2026.

Rodrigo, Yigit and Shaheen's project, ‘AURA:A bracelet for skin protection through cancer and UV detection,’ is a 3D-printed smart bracelet that monitors UV exposure, assesses skin lesions, and classifies moles using AI, all in real time and entirely offline to protect user privacy. A companion app connects via Bluetooth to display data and guide the user toward early intervention against UV damage and skin cancer.

Good luck to you three!

✈️ Stay tuned for updates from Izmir!

Meet our partners!

Introducing Olivier Parisot, Senior Research and Technology Associate at
Luxembourg Institute Of Science And Technology (LIST)

“I come here out of habit, for the past few years now, it has allowed me to meet different people and especially to see that the future of science is already here!” - Olivier

LIST’s main mission is to advance research, connect basic and applied science, and deliver distinctive solutions that add value in three areas – the natural, built and industrial environments. They bridge different disciplines to generate transversal intelligence in strategic sectors like Space, AI, and Defence and as such are a significant partner for FJSL.

During their trip to the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) () in Phoenix, Arizona, Harald and the FJSL team had the exclusive opportunity to meet Luxembourgish researcher Dr. Patrick Pirrotte (all left), who is an Associate Professor at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) () and Director of the Integrated Mass Spectrometry Shared Resource (IMS-SR) at the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center ().

Dr. Pirrotte's laboratory focuses on cancer research, working to identify biological markers — proteins that can help detect diseases early, track their progression, and monitor how patients respond to treatment over time.

Harald and the team were invited to visit the TGen lab for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour. Dr. Pirrotte walked them through his work in an accessible and engaging way, making it easy for everyone to understand.

A special thank you to Anne Goeres () for making this connection possible and helping turn this visit into a truly memorable experience!
