'Politics for all' charity seeks to help non-Luxembourgers access politics

The 'Let's demystify local politics!' project incorporated a trip to the capital to show how international rules affect everyday life in Luxembourg.

'Demystifying local politics' is a project run by the non-profit Politics for all in the European Union, under which 77 people, most of them non-Luxembourgers, visited the Chamber of Deputies / Chambre des Députés Grand-Duché de Luxembourg last weekend. The initiative's aim is to bring the country's national and local politics closer to citizens, for instance through direct, unfussy contact with politicians, who were also invited to the meeting.

Interest from elected officials was almost non-existent, aside from one MP, Marc Lies, who oversaw the Chamber visit, in addition to the sole municipal officer, Antonia Afonso Bagine, who made an appearance. A fact the president of the non-profit, Clara Moraru, regretted.

The tour through the city later proved all the more interesting, however, as concrete examples were used to illustrate the extent to which everyday life in Luxembourg has to adapt to international regulations. The walking tour was put together by historian and UNESCO specialist Robert Philippart, who tailored it to that theme.

As we start celebrating Luxembourg National Day, we’re proud to look back on a very special day for local democracy. 🇱🇺

On Saturday 20 June, our 2nd transnational citizen meeting of the “Let’s demystify local politics!” project gathered 77 people from 17 nationalities in Luxembourg City, all united by one goal: making local democracy more accessible.

The programme included:
- a visit to the Luxembourg Parliament, the heart of our democracy, with MP Marc Lies;
- a guided tour of the city with local councillor and historian Robert Philippart;
- a warm lunch in the city centre hosted by Politics for all, joined by local councillor Antonia Afonso.

Throughout the day, we saw how important dialogue, inclusion and active citizenship are, values supported by the European Union and Interreg Grande Région, who co‑fund this cross‑border project. Our pink microphone was there too: the symbol of our mission to give a voice to residents who don’t always feel heard in local politics – women, young people, people with immigrant backgrounds and many others. Every voice matters.

A heartfelt thank you to all participants, our partners at Ciep Lux in Arlon, and the members of Union des Indépendants Luxembourg who joined us and helped make this day a success.

Around 70 people are already registered for our citizen visit to the Luxembourg Parliament on 20 June, residents from different backgrounds who all share one thing: curiosity about how democracy really works where they live.

As part of our project “Let’s Demystify Local Politics!”, co‑funded by the European Union under Interreg Grande Région - Großregion, participants will spend a day inside Luxembourg’s democracy: a guided visit of the Parliament with MP Marc Lies (CSV), a shared lunch, and a tour of Luxembourg City through the lens of citizen participation and UNESCO heritage led by local councillor, historian and UNESCO Site Manager hon. Dr. phil. Robert L. Philippart (DP).

Many people who join Politics for all activities come alone and leave with new ideas, new connections, and a stronger sense of belonging in Luxembourg.

65 participants, 16 nationalities, one shared goal: making local democracy more accessible.

Today in Arlon, our citizen meeting within the “Let’s demystify local politics!” project brought together a diverse group of residents from Luxembourg and Belgium to exchange, learn, and connect across borders.

The programme included a visit to the Province of Luxembourg and a meeting with its President Jean-Marie Meyer, a convivial lunch hosted by Ciep Lux, and discussions at Arlon City Hall with two Vice Mayors on how foreign residents can actively participate in local political life.

These rich exchanges highlighted the importance of dialogue, inclusion, and active citizenship — values at the heart of the European Union / Interreg Grande Région / Großregion, which cofunds this beautiful and important project. EU Funds Luxembourg

🎉 Ce samedi 18/04, un petit groupe de 40 personnes curieuses partira du Luxembourg pour passer toute la journée à Arlon, où nous retrouverons un groupe de participant·e·s belges. Ensemble, nous découvrirons la ville et verrons comment fonctionne vraiment la démocratie locale dans la pratique – au‑delà des mythes sur les “politiciens”. C’est pour cela que notre événement s’appelle « Démystifions la politique locale! »

Ce que nous aimons le plus dans ces journées, c’est de voir des personnes qui arrivent avec des doutes ou des idées reçues sur la politique repartir plus confiantes, mieux informées et motivées à s’engager. Et tout aussi important : des participant·e·s qui commencent la journée comme de parfaits inconnus repartent souvent avec de nouvelles connexions – voire de nouvelles amitiés.

Notre groupe à Arlon est un magnifique reflet de la Grande Région : 17 nationalités représentées – albanaise, luxembourgeoise, ukrainienne, belge, roumaine, italienne, nigériane, tadjike, syrienne, chinoise, grecque, indienne, camerounaise, zimbabwéenne, britannique, ghanéenne et portugaise – par ordre d’inscription et non d’importance (chacun·e sera traité·e comme un·e VIP 😊).

Sur place, nous serons accueilli·e·s par nos partenaires belges du Ciep Lux Arlon et par des responsables politiques locaux pour échanger sur la politique locale, la participation citoyenne et la vie dans la Grande Région, vue des deux côtés de la frontière.

Si vous cherchez une occasion de rencontrer des personnes réfléchies et d’avoir des conversations profondes sur la façon dont nos communautés sont gouvernées, vous êtes les bienvenu·e·s pour nous rejoindre.

This Saturday 18/04, a small group of 40 curious people will spend a full day in Arlon, discovering the town and how local democracy really works in practice – beyond the myths about “politicians”. That’s why our event is called “Let’s Demystify Local Politics!”

What we love most about these days is seeing people who arrive with doubts or misconceptions about politics leave feeling more confident, informed and motivated to get involved. And just as important: people who start the day as strangers often leave as new connections – sometimes even friends.

Our group in Arlon is a beautiful snapshot of the Greater Region: 17 nationalities represented – Albanian, Luxembourgish, Ukrainian, Belgian, Romanian, Italian, Nigerian, Tajik, Syrian, Chinese, Greek, Indian, Cameroonian, Zimbabwean, British, Ghanaian and Portuguese – in order of registration, not importance (everyone will be treated as a VIP 😊).

If you’re looking for an opportunity to meet thoughtful people and have meaningful conversations about how our communities are run, you’re very welcome to join us.

🇫🇷 💡 Le projet « Démystifions la politique locale ! » clôture son 9ᵉ mois en beauté

Quoi de mieux pour démystifier la politique locale dans la Grande Région – en particulier pour les résident·e·s étranger·e·s, encore sous‑représenté·e·s dans la vie politique – que de leur donner accès à la parole d’élu·e·s engagé·e·s au sein des conseils communaux ?

Depuis le lancement du projet, les 2 partenaires, Politics for all asbl (LU) et le CIEP d’Arlon (BE), ont travaillé main dans la main pour préparer deux rencontres citoyennes :

- le 18 avril à Arlon,

- le 20 juin à Luxembourg.

De part et d’autre de la frontière, la communication a été lancée afin d’inviter les personnes intéressées à y prendre part et à découvrir la politique locale « de l’intérieur ».

Parallèlement, les partenaires ont conçu le support médiatique « Voix de la diversité : histoires d’engagement citoyen » : réflexion sur les intervenant·e·s à inviter et les messages clés à mettre en avant, planification collaborative du format, élaboration stratégique du contenu.

Cette semaine, le 9ᵉ mois du projet s’est achevé par une étape concrète importante : le lancement du tournage des premières interviews, avec Morad Laqli, du groupe Ecolo et Paul Kiamé, conseiller communal d’Arlon pour le groupe Arlon 2030 (Les Engagés).

🎥 Ces témoignages seront au cœur de notre futur support audiovisuel et illustrent déjà l’engagement des élu·e·s locaux à rendre la politique plus accessible à toutes et tous.
