Asteroid Day

Asteroid Day Asteroid Day is observed on June 30, a global awareness movement where people come together to learn about asteroids & what we can do to protect Earth.

Asteroid Day was sanctioned by the United Nations and is a program of the Asteroid Foundation. Asteroid Day is a global awareness campaign where people from around the world come together to learn about asteroids and what we can do to protect our planet, families, communities, and future generations from future asteroid impacts. Asteroid Day will be held on the anniversary of the Tunguska event in

Siberia, the largest asteroid to impact Earth in recent history – an asteroid that devastated an area about the size of any major metropolitan area. Regionally organised large and small events will be held on Asteroid Day – from live concerts and community events, to lectures and other educational programmes, to support a movement calling for increased detection and mapping of asteroids. The Asteroid Day Declaration, calling for this action, has been signed by astronauts, scientists, artists and leaders in business and technology. Employing available technology to detect, track and defend our Earth from dangerous asteroid impacts is something we know how to do. This will assure the survival of generations to come as well as preserve our heritage and all that we have learned and created as a species. We have the knowledge as well as the technology to prevent these future catastrophic events. The fact that this initiative could save ALL the species on this planet that have evolved alongside us. We have a responsibility as custodians, not just for the planet, but for all the abundant life which inhabits it. Continuing to orbit our solar system without the knowledge of potentially dangerous asteroids in our orbital neighbourhood is equivalent to playing the odds in a game of Las Vegas roulette – only this time, we are betting our families, homes and indeed future generations. The probability of Earth being impacted in a random location by a 100-megaton asteroid in your lifetime is about the same as the probability of you being killed in an automobile accident. These odds on any individual day are small, yet few among us would drive a car without wearing a seat belt. The Asteroid Day Declaration calls for the discovery and tracking of 100,000 asteroids a year over the next ten years. In addition to protecting our planet, this increased capability will provide dramatically improved knowledge of our Solar System for scientific and other purposes. In December 2016 the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/71/90, declaring 30 June International Asteroid Day in order to "observe each year at the international level the anniversary of the Tunguska impact over Siberia, Russian Federation, on 30 June 1908, and to raise public awareness about the asteroid impact hazard." International Asteroid Day is to raise public awareness about the asteroid impact hazard and inform the public about the crisis communication actions to be taken at the global level in case of a credible near-Earth object threat.

🪐 New update: Hazardous Asteroids is now available in a revised version!

Developed by the education team of the NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory and announced by NSF this updated educational investigation features a refreshed design, improved navigation for teachers and students, and new resources connected to discoveries from Rubin Observatory's Early Science observations.

🌎 One of the biggest updates? Hazardous Asteroids is now available in Spanish for the first time, making the investigation accessible to even more learners and educators around the world.

Through the investigation, students explore impact risk assessment, analyse real data, and learn how scientists identify, track and assess potentially hazardous asteroids.

🔭 Rubin Observatory has already demonstrated its extraordinary ability to discover and track Solar System objects during its early operations, with thousands of previously unknown asteroids identified and many more objects measured and characterised. Future versions of the investigation will incorporate Rubin data, bringing students even closer to current asteroid research and planetary defence efforts.

Science is most powerful when it is accessible, engaging and connected to real discoveries.

🌍 A new language. The same mission to educate and inspire.

The Missions to Asteroids exhibition is now available in Arabic, making its educational content on asteroid exploration and planetary defence accessible to even more communities around the world.

This new version was translated and adapted by Dr Taha Shisseh from the Institute of Meteoritics at the of New Mexico. Alongside his research on meteorites and the early Solar System, Dr Shisseh is committed to making planetary science accessible through his Space Chat initiative.

As we look ahead to the International Year of Asteroid Awareness and Planetary Defence in 2029, expanding educational resources into new languages helps ensure that more people can engage with the science behind asteroids and planetary defence.

🎶 Music meets asteroids.

From Italy to South Korea and Chile, musical performances have become a creative way to make Asteroid Day events more immersive, engaging and educational.
Space-themed soundtracks, from Armageddon to Star Wars and Interstellar, help create an atmosphere that brings audiences closer to asteroids, impact risks and planetary defence.

Queen songs are also increasingly present as a tribute to Brian May , legendary guitarist and co-founder of Asteroid Day, who has long supported public education about asteroids.

From parody contests to concerts in planetariums using real images from space missions, music can turn science into a memorable shared experience.

Can misinformation affect planetary defence? 🌍☄️

A new research article from The University of New Mexico, led by Mark Boslough, explores how misinformation can shape public understanding of asteroids, comets, impact risks and planetary defence.

Mark Boslough has been closely connected to Asteroid Day since its early years, including through the Asteroid Day expert panel and early AD LIVE discussions. His work reminds us why clear, responsible and accessible science communication matters. 🔭

Planetary defence is not only about observing space. It is also about building public trust, sharing accurate information and helping people understand real risks without sensationalism.

From a lunar-like landscape to space robotics in action 🌕🤖

Students from Vauban - Ecole et Lycée Français de Luxembourg and Lycée Edward Steichen - Ecole internationale Edward Steichen explored the fascinating world of space robotics during a special visit to the University of Luxembourg

Together with researchers, they discovered the LunaLab, explored robotics technologies, asked questions, and learned how robots can help us explore the Moon, asteroids, and environments humans cannot easily reach yet ☄️

A hands-on afternoon where curiosity, science, and engineering came together to inspire the next generation of space explorers 🚀
