Eis Ozeaner bedecke méi wéi 70% vun der Äerduewerfläch a sinn domat d’Doheem vu ganz villen Aarten. Duerch Iwwerfëschung, Plastikverschmotzung an der Zerstéierung vun de marinnen Ekosystemer sti si awer ënner immensem Drock.

Bei Sea Shepherd engagéiere mir eis, d‘Mierer an hir Bewunner ze schützen an ze verdeedegen – well gesond Ozeaner d'Grondlag fir eng gesond Zukunft sinn.

Um haitege Welt-Ozeandag erënnere mir dofir drun: All Bäitrag zielt. Zesumme kënne mir eis Ozeaner fir d' zukünfteg Generatiounen ze erhalen.

💙 Fir d'Ozeaner. Fir d'Liewen. Fir d'Zukunft.

🌊 Today is World Oceans Day! 🌊

Our oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and are home to countless species. Yet they are under immense pressure from overfishing, plastic pollution and the destruction of marine ecosystems.

At Sea Shepherd, we are committed to protecting and defending our oceans – because healthy oceans are the foundation of a healthy future.

On today’s World Oceans Day, we remind everyone: every contribution counts. Together, we can help preserve our oceans for future generations.

💙 For the oceans. For life. For the future.

🌊 Sea Shepherd Luxembourg huet gëschter um Clean-Up vu Sea Shepherd Belgium zu Middelkerke deelgeholl.

Wärend méi wéi zwou Stonne gouf de Strand an d'Dünen grëndlech gebotzt.

Nieft de Membere vu Sea Shepherd Luxembourg a Sea Shepherd Belgium war och e Volunteer vu Sea Shepherd Czech Republic mat dobäi.
Dat weist emol méi, datt de Schutz vun eisen Ozeaner a Gewässer keng Grenze kennt.

Als Volunteer bei Sea Shepherd Luxembourg ass een net onbedéngt nëmmen zu Lëtzebuerg aktiv. Mir ënnerstëtzen och eis Chapteren am Ausland bei méi groussen Aktiounen.

🙏 E grousse Merci un d'Sea Shepherd Belgium fir d'Organisatioun an un all d'Volontairen, déi hir Zäit investéiert hunn, fir eis Küsten e bëssen méi propper ze maachen.

🌊 Sea Shepherd Luxembourg took part in a beach clean-up organized by Sea Shepherd Belgium in Middelkerke yesterday.

For more than two hours, volunteers thoroughly cleaned the beach and surrounding dunes. A significant amount of waste was collected—debris that would otherwise have eventually ended up in the ocean, posing a threat to marine wildlife and ecosystems.

It was especially inspiring to see volunteers from different chapters working side by side. Alongside members of Sea Shepherd Luxembourg and Sea Shepherd Belgium, a volunteer from Sea Shepherd Czech Republic also joined the action. It was a great reminder that protecting our oceans and waterways knows no borders.

Being a volunteer with Sea Shepherd Luxembourg does not necessarily mean being active only in Luxembourg. We also support our fellow chapters abroad during larger actions and conservation initiatives.

🙏 A big thank you to Sea Shepherd Belgium for organizing this event, and to all the volunteers who dedicated their time and energy to help make our coastlines a little cleaner.

💙 Every piece of waste removed from nature is a step towards healthier oceans.

🚨 Yesterday, the Faroe Islands became the scene of a day we will never forget.

At around 14:00 in Tórshavn, a grind was called and boats set out. Whalers spent more than an hour searching for and pursuing a pod of around 100 bottlenose dolphins. At 15:20, the hunt was called off after the species was identified. The last documented slaughter of bottlenose dolphins in the Faroe Islands was in 2022.

But the day was far from over.

Later, at around 19:00, two more grinds were called simultaneously in different locations.

In Tórshavn, 402 pilot whales were driven in and killed. This number does not include fetuses, juveniles, or pregnant mothers. Four bottlenose dolphins swimming with the pod were also killed. A large crowd gathered to watch. As the number of whales overwhelmed the small group of whalers, the killing took an extended amount of time and the scene became chaotic. This made it the largest grind in Tórshavn in 147 years.

Our crew witnessed numerous whales being killed without the spinal lance, the mandatory tool meant to paralyse the whale before it is bled out with knives. Pilot whales were crushed against rocks, driven over, and cut by boat propellers. The whales’ cries filled the bay, drowned out by the roaring boats.

One whaler admitted to one of our volunteers on the ground that there were not enough spinal lances, and that many pilot whales were killed with knives only.

As the slaughter spiralled into chaos, local papers sarcastically described the scene as “good news for environmentalists,” because everyone there knew what it meant: the whalers had lost control, and the cruelty they tried to hide had become impossible to deny.
At the same time, 168 white-sided dolphins were slaughtered on a beach in Skalabotnur. Our crew on the ground reported another messy kill, with dolphins fighting desperately for their lives.
By then, around 574 pilot whales and white-sided dolphins had already been killed, not including fetuses, juveniles, or pregnant mothers.

We thought the greed of men must finally be satisfied.
It was not.

A third, more secretive grind then began in Hvalvik. Unlike the others, it had not been announced through the usual public channels. We were alerted by local supporters, who told us that some whalers had commented they were pleased we would not know about it and would not be there to document it. Maybe that led to the escalation of frustration on the scene, that later resulted in two of our crew being arrested.

Another pod of white-sided dolphins was being hunted. This time, our crew reported that the whalers appeared unprepared, with only one spinal lance on the beach. They were also aggressive towards our team. One crew member reported being pushed, and said his camera was knocked out of his hands while he was documenting the scene.

The number of dolphins killed there is estimated at 132 white-sided dolphins, not including fetuses, juveniles, or pregnant mothers.
Tensions escalated on the scene. Two of our crew members were arrested after being accused of interfering with the hunt. The grind foreman reported to police that the crew would not comply with his instruction to leave the scene. While our crew did remain on site to document the facts of the situation, they did not interfere or act in a way that justifies the deportation they are potentially facing today.

The charges are still pending.

The lack of transparency among whalers is escalating with every grind as they feel the growing pressure and critique locally and internationally. Their cruelty and greed continue to be exposed by our crew, who work within the limits of national law and still manage to secure crucial information for the public and for policy makers.

Together, we will continue working to end this for good.
No tradition can justify this level of suffering inflicted on highly intelligent, social animals.

🎉🌊 Zu Éiere vum 100. Gebuertsdag vum Sir David Attenborough huet d‘St George's International School den 8. Mee 2026 een Ozean-Symposium organiséiert, bei deem méi wéi 240 Schüler hiert Bewosstsi fir de Schutz vun den Ozeaner a fir d‘Nohaltegkeet gestäerkt hunn.

D‘Evenement war gepräägt vun Atelieren, Ausstellungen an Diskussiounen iwwer Biodiversitéit, Klima a Gesondheet vun de Mierer. 👉 Un eisem Sea Shepherd Luxembourg Stand hu mir d’Schüler iwwert eis Missiounen a besonnesch iwwert Themen wéi Plastikverschmotzung an illegal Fëscherei, awer och iwwert d’Krill-Campagne informéiert. Mat groussem Interessi hu si ganz vill Froe gestallt, ob déi eis Volunteers hinne gäre geäntfert hunn.

E besonneschen Highlight vum Symposium war d'Präsenz vum Captain Alex Cornelissen, CEO vu Sea Shepherd Global, deen am Kader vum Ocean Gatekeeper Programm zesumme mat de Schüler e liewensgrousst Wandgemälde vun engem Wal enthüllen duerft. Dobäi huet hien d’Initiativ vun de Schüler immens gelueft, well si déi nächst Generatioun inspiréiert fir d’Weltmierer an d’Mieresliewen ze schützen. 🐋💧

Merci un d‘ St George's International School, Luxembourg ASBL fir déi super Organisatioun an dat gelongent Evenement ! 👏

🎉🌊 In honour of Sir David Attenborough's 100th birthday, St George's International School organised an Ocean Symposium on 8 May 2026, at which more than 240 students strengthened their awareness of ocean conservation and sustainability.

The event featured workshops, exhibitions and discussions on biodiversity, climate and the health of the oceans. 👉 At our Sea Shepherd Luxembourg stand, we informed the students about our missions and, in particular, about issues such as plastic pollution and illegal fishing, as well as about the krill campaign. With great interest, they asked many questions, which our volunteers were happy to answer.

A special highlight of the symposium was the presence of Captain Alex Cornelissen, CEO of Sea Shepherd Global, who, as part of the Ocean Gatekeeper programme, could unveil a life-sized whale mural alongside the pupils. He praised the students’ initiative, as they are inspiring the next generation to protect the world's oceans and marine life. 🐋💧

Thank you to St George's International School for the superb organisation and the successful event! 👏

Alles Guddes fir de Gebuertsdag Sir David Attenborough 🌟 Haut ass en ganz besonneschen Dag fir eise bloen Planéit, well seng gréisste Stëmm 100 Joer kritt huet.

Iwwert Joerzéngten hutt Dir eis gehollef, d'Welt anescht ze gesinn, oder vläicht méi éierlech, wéi se ass: aussergewéinlech. Dir hutt eis d'Schéinheet vun eise Mierer, d‘Fragilitéit vun eisen Ökosystemer an déi dréngend Noutwendegkeet, se ze schützen, gewisen. Är Stëmm huet net nëmmen d'Natur dokumentéiert, si ass hir Stëmm ginn.

Et war eng Éier fir Sea Shepherd, Deel vun dëser Rees nieft Iech ze sinn, besonnesch duerch d'Dokumentairen ‚Ocean‘ an ‚A Perfect Planet‘. Dës Projeten hu gehollef, dat, wat mir schützen, ze verstäerken an de Message nach méi Leit op der ganzer Welt ze vermëttelen.

Är Stëmm inspiréiert eis nach ëmmer all Dag.
Merci fir Äert ganzt Liewen voller Engagement, fir Är Weisheet an Äre onverännerlechen Optimismus.

Nëmmen dat Bescht fir den 100. Gebuertsdag,
vum Sea Shepherd Global-Team 💙

Dear Sir David Attenborough, happy birthday 🌟 Today is a very important day for our blue planet, as its greatest voice turns 100.

For decades, you have helped us see the world differently, or perhaps more truthfully, as it is: extraordinary. You’ve shown us the beauty of our oceans, the fragility of our ecosystems, and the urgent need to protect them. Your voice has not only documented nature, it has become its voice.

It has been an honour for Sea Shepherd to be part of this journey alongside you, especially through the documentaries Ocean and A Perfect Planet. These projects have helped amplify what we fight to protect and carry that message to even more people around the world.

Your voice continues to inspire us every single day.
Thank you for your lifetime of dedication, for your wisdom, and for your unwavering hope.

Happy 100th birthday,
from the Sea Shepherd Global crew 💙
