➡️ Addressing Inequities in Lithuanian Residency Training
The EJD supports Lithuanian Junior Doctors in their efforts to eliminate trainee-funded postgraduate training and improve health workforce planning in the country.
Trainee-funded residency positions, introduced in 2009, have created significant challenges:
- Inequity: Access to certain specialties depends on personal wealth, not national healthcare demands.
- Workforce Gaps: In 2024, 17% of Lithuanian medical graduates were unable to secure government-funded residency positions, leaving many unable to advance in their careers.
- Public Fund Inefficiencies: Residency salaries are publicly funded, regardless of demand for the specialty, undermining strategic healthcare investments.
- Systemic Misalignment: Divided decision-making power between the Ministry of Health and universities leads to misaligned residency allocations.
This system not only impacts fairness but also exacerbates the healthcare workforce crisis, with some graduates abandoning the profession or emigrating.
We stand with Lithuanian Junior Doctors in calling for an end to trainee-funded residency positions and a unified, strategic approach to health workforce planning.
