The Corona Virus pandemic and subsequent lockdowns have had a significant impact on our face-to-face relationship style of outreach to teens. Like many schools, churches, and other groups we too went online in a bid to remain connected with youth.
We remained faithful to being there for youth, creating a friendly and open environment to chat, have fun and talk about Jesus. This new space presented many challenges, but we faithfully turned up each week.
Interestingly, most of the teens who showed up online were teens who would not necessarily turn up to our face-to-face meetings. These teens where the online-teen. They spent their time after school online gaming and in chats with like-minded youth.
The online teen would likely never turn up to church, a youth group, or even a Young Life club event. They consisted primarily of atheists and skeptics who have no problem mocking and chastising outsiders.
They shared stories of their struggles with the online world and how fatigued and bored they were with online school - many failing to turn up for classes.
We had not seen this youth sub-culture in the past. If it was not for this pandemic, we may never had noticed them. But here they were turning up each week to hang out and hear a little more of who Jesus is, and the difference he can make in their lives.
As things get back to normal, we'll make every effort to continue to provide online content and engage with our online teen friends. We now see them and they matter.
