Įdomi istorija

King Frederick IX of Denmark showing off his tattooed upper body. The king had a passion for sailing and bodybuilding. The photo appeared in Life Magazine in 1951.

Known affectionately as the “Sailor King,” Frederik’s tattoos were more than decoration, they were badges of identity earned during his naval career and global voyages. By the time he ascended the throne in 1947, he had amassed ink inspired by sailor motifs: dragons, sparrows, anchors, even his own crown-prince monogram, all applied between his 30s and 50s, often during stops in Asia and commissioned by famed tattoo artist George Burchett.

Alongside his tattoos, Frederik was deeply committed to bodybuilding, shaping a regal physique that matched his love of sailing and athletics. At 52, he sent photos of his chiseled, inked body to the press, blending royal dignity with unexpected ruggedness.

The image remains a striking portrait of a king who married maritime passion, modern fitness, and personal expression in a fundamentally unconventional way.
