The world is facing two interconnected crises: accelerating climate change and growing energy insecurity. As United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized at the Global Energy Transition and Electrification Summit in London yesterday that, both crises are driven by one common factor, fossil fuels.

The solution lies in clean electrification powered by renewable energy. Renewables are now the cheapest, fastest and most scalable source of new electricity in most parts of the world, offering a pathway toward energy security, economic stability and a more sustainable future for all.

The transition to clean energy must happen faster, at greater scale, and in a way that ensures developing countries are not left behind.

Today, the UN Resident Coordinator joined partners and stakeholders for the launch of the WYDE Women’s Leadership Initiative in Lesotho, a flagship global initiative led by UN Women together with International IDEA, IPU and UCLG, with the support of the European Union.

WYDE seeks to strengthen democratic participation, inclusive governance and women’s leadership worldwide by building networks of women leaders, generating evidence on women’s political participation, and addressing barriers that continue to limit women’s full participation in political life.

In Lesotho, the initiative is being implemented under the theme: “60 Women for 60 Years of Lesotho’s Independence” , a call for greater representation of women in leadership and decision-making spaces, including the National Assembly.

The UN Resident Coordinator commended BAM Group Foundation and partners for championing inclusive leadership that empowers young women, promotes the participation of women with disabilities, and strengthens collaboration among government, civil society, the media and development partners.

The United Nations remains committed to supporting efforts that advance gender equality, inclusive governance and the meaningful participation of women and youth in democracy and public life.

Today, on the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, the UN Lesotho Country Team stands united in promoting respect, inclusion and dignity for all.

Hate speech undermines peace, fuels discrimination, deepens divisions and can lead to violence and exclusion. In an increasingly connected world, harmful narratives can spread rapidly, affecting individuals, communities and societies as a whole.

This day serves as a reminder that we all have a responsibility to speak out against hate speech in all its forms and to promote understanding, empathy and mutual respect. Whether online or offline, our words matter and can either build bridges or create barriers.

Together, let us choose compassion over hate, unity over division, and dialogue over intolerance.
