We had a lovely day yesterday meeting with three trefoil guilds from Johannesburg. We loved sharing our stories with everyone and getting to know them. The evening was spent looking at the night sky with a large telescope.

Today we split and did different things. Rhi stayed at the centre to relax, Dawn had stayed over with family, and Jane, Jan and Maxine did a tour of Soweto, City tour and apartheid museum

After completing our Topaz trip we decided to extend our Girlguiding and Trefoil adventure, in Johannesburg, South Africa.

We contacted the National Centre through WAGGGS and have had a lovely welcome from them and the local Brownies, Guides and Rangers.

They have been working towards several badges and presented us with an evening of culture through food, history, dance and song. We were even interviewed by a panel of rangers.

We feel they did themselves proud and hope they all get their badges.

It’s been our last day in Lesotho today. Plans changed today but we spent a fabulous afternoon at the Girlguiding headquarters swapping gifts, enrolling trefoil members and sadly saying goodbye, for now!

We have all thoroughly enjoyed our Topaz trip and feel honoured and privileged to have been given this fantastic opportunity. We go home after making new friends, getting involved, giving support and getting active, with memories to last us a lifetime.

We really packed it in today.

A visit to the Catholic Commission for Justice & Peace to discuss the work they do across Lesotho.

Then onto SOS Children’s Village to deliver activities to the 85 girl guides in the hope to recruit some more.

We ticked off our “to do list” by purchasing🍊and 🐟 from the street vendors in our car.

And then it was time to try out activities at Durham Link!

We are all ready for bed but it still too early 😴

We’ve had a busy few days, prepping for and going to camp. We also managed to tuck in a school visit before we set off. It’s been tiring, but what an amazing experience we’ve had. Shared our knowledge and skills with 200 new people, and were able to learn and experience Lesotho Girlguiding first hand.

It’s been a sunrise and sunset day with lots in between.

We arrived at Thaba Bosiu mountain early morning and hiked to the top learning all about the history of the clans which arrived and the lifestyle. We saw Hirax, who were watching our journey up the mountain, learnt about the uses of different plants, the life of kings and had a story about the tortoise, the monkey and the rosehip tree.

We returned to the bottom and explored the museum and cultural village learning about the arrival of clans, polygyny, blanket patterns and how villages are set out.

On our way home we stopped off at a nature reserve and we also watched the sunset

Today we travelled to Berea to visit Kome Caves. It was an hours car ride and then a decent walk down to the caves, as we couldn’t take the car any farther., which turned into a long but enjoyable trip.

Stunning scenery, cultural history and a visit to a family in the village.

Wow! What an amazing day. We’ve managed to recruit 2 trefoil members from the district attorneys office and a school is going to provide leaders for new units within it.

We’ve visited the deputy patron and enjoyed stories, refreshments and singing.

A highlight for all of us was when the district attorney stated “It is rare to come across visitors who come to support others. Rather than coming for the want of diamonds, land or water.” He wants us to work with them to give young mums the opportunity of health programs and younger girls the chance to visit the UK.

Plans changed today so we had the morning to ourselves, chatting and getting to know each other better.

We then visited No 7 restuarant where 100% of the profits are re-invested into Kick4Life’s charitable work. We watched the great work going on here with the disadvantaged young people, most who walk here every week from their villages.

We ate and celebrated Jan’s birthday, whilst discussing the cultural differences in Girlguiding and Trefoil between Lesotho and UK.

Late afternoon was spent on a walking tour of Maseru and the evening passed preparing our activities and gifts for our visits tomorrow.
