🌍♿ World Assistive Technology Day 2026: Advancing Inclusion Through Local Innovation
On 4 June 2026, stakeholders from across Lesotho gathered to commemorate World Assistive Technology Day 2026 under the theme:
"Strengthening Local Innovation and Technical Capacity for Sustainable Access to Assistive Technology."

The event was led by the Ministry of Gender, Youth and Social Development, in partnership with Lesotho National Federation of Organisations of the Disabled , Lesotho Disability Advisory Council , Lesotho Council of NGOs , United Nations Resident Coordinator's Office in Lesotho , and other key partners. The dialogue brought together government representatives, development partners, civil society organizations, educational institutions, and disability advocates to explore sustainable solutions for improving access to assistive technology in Lesotho.

Discussions focused on the importance of strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions to establish and operationalize orthopaedics and assistive technology workshops. Such initiatives can enhance local production, maintenance, repair, and innovation of assistive devices while creating opportunities for skills development and employment.

As , we remain committed to promoting disability inclusion and supporting the meaningful participation of persons with disabilities in all aspects of development. We value our continued collaboration with Organisations of Persons with Disabilities , particularly and its members, as well as government and development partners working to advance accessibility, dignity, and equal opportunities for all.

Achieving sustainable access to assistive technology requires collective action, strong partnerships, and investment in local solutions. Together, we can create a more inclusive Lesotho where no one is left behind.

With appreciation to the Southern Africa Federation of the Disabled and all partners championing disability rights, accessibility, and inclusion across the region.

Assistive Technology (AT) includes products and services such as wheelchairs, eyeglasses, hearing aids, prosthetic limbs, screen readers, and digital assistive devices that help people move, communicate, learn, work, and participate fully in everyday life. These technologies promote independence, dignity, and inclusion, enabling millions of people to access opportunities that many often take for granted.

On 4 June 2026, Lesotho will join the global community in commemorating World Assistive Technology Day under the campaign. The event will bring together stakeholders, persons with disabilities, government representatives, civil society organizations, and development partners to raise awareness about the importance of assistive technology and advocate for greater accessibility and inclusion for all.

Together, we can unlock everyday opportunities and create a society where everyone can participate, contribute, and thrive.

Today, 2.5 billion people need at least one form of assistive product - such as wheelchairs, eyeglasses, hearing aids, prosthetics and digital devices. But today only 10% of people in low income countries can access the AT they need.

To mark World Day for Assistive Technology, we’re shining a light on this inequity and the urgent need for people to access affordable assistive technology. AT enables people to live independent lives – to study, work and enjoy the everyday moments that many of us take for granted. Join us and let's unlock a world where there are opportunities for all. 🌍🌍🌍

We at Lesotho Council of NGOs believe in building a world of and where everyone has the opportunity to live with dignity, independence, and equal access to opportunities.

Assistive technology has the power to transform the lives of millions of people worldwide — from wheelchairs and hearing aids to screen readers, prosthetics, and glasses. Yet many people still struggle to access the assistive products they need every day.

Together, we can help by advocating for improved access to assistive technology and creating more inclusive communities for all.

In low-income countries only 10% of people have the assistive technology they need, in stark contrast to 90% of people in need, in high-income countries who do.
