World Wetlands Day 2026!!

Wetlands are lifelines for sustainable land and water management, supporting biodiversity, regulating floods, purifying waters and sustaining livelihoods. This year's commemoration at EarthCare Alliance we take this opportunity to celebrate with herders as frontline custodians of these ecosystems, protecting wetlands through traditional grazing practices and seasonal mobility. Through their Indigenous knowledge and citizen science, herders monitor water flows, plant health, and ecosystem changes.
Wetlands conservation strengthens climate resilience for people, livestock and nature, and by honoring herders means safeguarding wetlands for future generations.

On the 24th and 25th January 2026, EarthCare Alliance successfully hosted a capacity-building workshop for herders at Ha Phafoli, Qabane Ha ’Muso (Senqunyane Catchment), bringing together security, sustainability, and community stewardship.
Day 1 focused on Community Policing and Crime Prevention, facilitated by the Lesotho Mounted Police Service, highlighting its role in advancing national and continental Peace and Security priorities, in line with the African Union agenda 2063 Peace and Security Mandate. Discussions also addressed sexual harassment policies and related offences, strengthening awareness and protection within rural pastoral communities where herders are mostly perceived to be perpetrators of such offences yet mostly marginalized in terms of policy dialogues and inclusion.

Day 2 emphasized sustainable agricultural practices, food security, and nutrition, delivered by a Community Nutrition Officer (Mrs Mahlompho Ramokoining) from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition - Hloahloeng Agric Resource Centre, where the conversations were around sustainable production practices, good handling of foods, balancing diets and preserving extra foods for seasons of insufficiency. EarthCare Alliance further engaged herders on their critical role as custodians of natural resources, particularly rangelands and wetlands, to ensure long-term ecosystem resilience.
This activity aligns with January’s theme of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) 2026, which underscores the importance of peaceful, resilient pastoral communities and sustainable rangelands management.

For inclusive governance and management of natural resources in this catchment, we facilitated successful open voting of the executive committee of herders representing different villages (Ha 'Muso, Ha Thuhloane, Ha Mohlokoane, Ha Setlhotlelo, Ha Makoafo, Ha Malinyane, Ha Khama-Khamane, Ha Phafoli, Ha Makoafo and Khibiliting)

We thank all our partners and participants for their active engagement in promoting peace, sustainability, and responsible pastoralism. We are more than grateful to the Area Chief - Morena Phafoli Phafoli for the warm reception and unwavering support throughout the whole process. We also appreciate the enormous support from LMPS Qacha's Nek (Inspector Hlalele Machachamise - Commanding Sekake Police station) and LMPS Mohale's Hoek (District Commissioner Senior Supritendent Mapesela Klass).

INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF RANGELANDS AND PASTORALISTS!!

As we welcome the blessings of the New Year, let us also celebrate the significant role played by the herding communities to our everyday livelihoods' development and natural resources management.

The United Nations General Assembly has officially declared 2026 as the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026), to be formally implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Rangelands represent the largest global land-cover type, and they provide diverse ecosystem services to our communities, especially rural herding communities (herders/pastoralists).

With almost half a decade of supporting herders' livelihoods and empowering them with sustainable biodiversity, climate action and environmental stewardship practices, EarthCare Alliance kick started this year with a clear obligation to bear responsibility to create platforms for the commemoration of the IYRP 2026.

On January 3rd 2026, in partnership with the Department of Range Resources Management, we hosted over fifty (50) herders, rural youth, and women from the Setibing community to launch the IYRP 2026 and celebrated the vital role played by the pastoralists and the ecosystem services we get from our rangelands, which aligns perfectly with this month's official theme - Rangelands and Pastoralists: A global overview of what rangelands are and who pastoralists represent.

The community came prepared to showcase their amazing livelihoods projects, featuring beautiful grass basketry, intricately woven hats, and heartwarming indigenous songs and poetry. This vibrant gathering marked the beginning of a year-long celebration of pastoral life and sustainable practices. Thanks to the Community Council and Chieftainship offices for the unwavering support and guidance, and most importantly Premier Foods through the Blue Ribbon bakery for luncheon and refreshments.

The significance of social inclusion and youth empowerment can not be overstated when it comes to sustainable management of our land and water resources.

Yesterday the Integrated Catchment Management (ICM) movement - ReNOKA held a workshop for various youth-led organizations and individuals to contribute to the development of the Integrated Catchment Management Youth Inclusion Strategy.

EarthCare Alliance Executive Director and passionate youth leader in sustainable development and youth empowerment Mr. Kopano Khama highlighted the importance of this vital process as it ensures diverse voices especially those of young people and it aligns with the Lesotho National Youth Policy (2017 - 2030).

He further concluded by showing how imperative it is to develop overarching strategies and policies that Leave No One Behind especially People with Disabilities (PWDs) and rural herding communities.
