Lesotho Scout Association Represented at Assistant Leader Trainer Course

We’re proud to share that the Lesotho Scout Association is represented at the Assistant Leader Training (ALT) Course held 24–30 May 2026 at Gordon Park Scout Camp, Matabeleland, Zimbabwe.

This was the first ALT course since 2011, and it brought together experienced Wood Badge holders from across the region to strengthen adult leader training across the Movement.

What the course covers:
- Adult learning principles for Scout leader training
- Course design & facilitation skills to deliver quality training
- Assessment, mentoring & feedback systems for volunteers
- Safe from Harm frameworks and upholding the Scout Promise and Law

Participants engaged in micro-teaching, syndicate work, case studies, and peer evaluations to build real facilitation and mentoring competencies.

The course aims to create strategic multipliers who ensure quality, consistency, and sustainability in adult training delivery across Scouting.

Having Lesotho represented means we’re building stronger capacity to deliver better training and support for our adult volunteers back home.

Diversity & Inclusion in Scouting | 22 May 2026

This past weekend, Lesotho Scout Association held a training workshop to officially launch our Diversity and Inclusion Policy.

The focus was on creating a scouting space where _every_ young person belongs including disabled youth and vulnerable children. Sessions were facilitated by Inclusive Tech World and the Ministry of Social Development, covering practical ways to make our programs accessible, welcoming, and safe for all.

Inclusive Tech World led a powerful session on disability awareness and inclusion.
Facilitated by:
Mrs Refiloehape Sesinyi
Mr Poloko
Mrs Mpumi

They reminded us that disability isn’t just about a person’s impairment — it’s also shaped by social and environmental barriers. Disability can be physical, mental, intellectual, sensory, or multiple, like blindness.

We explored 3 key models of disability:
- Medical model: Views disability as a problem within the person that needs treatment
- Charity model:Sees people with disabilities as dependent and needing help
- Social model:Shows that people become disabled when environments and attitudes are not inclusive

As the UN puts it, disability is an evolving concept that comes from the interaction between impairments and societal barriers like inaccessible spaces, negative attitudes, and lack of support.

Key takeaway: To enable equal participation, we must create safe, accessible, and inclusive environments for people with disabilities.

We were also joined by Mrs Ts’episo Ts’ots’otso from the Ministry of Social development - Maseru district who clearly explained what the Ministry is about and emphasized that with this project, they are ready to support as our target groups are groups of vulnerable people they are working with from different angles.

To close the workshop, participants went to the streets of Maseru to engage directly with children living on the streets and listen to their needs.

We’re committed to building a movement where diversity is present and inclusion is felt.

As we marked Safe From harm week, may we reminded that the work of a Leader is to ensure that systems are put in place before every event, ensure that all activities are safe and age appropriate, make sure all adults are aligned and committed to keep the participants and staff leaders safe, also there are safe focal persons who addresses any concerns of abuse with right procedures.

NB:SFH should not be an afterthought and should not be improvised,it needs to be well planned for

🛡️ SAFE FROM HARM WEEK 2026
📅 Day 5 | 15 May 2026

💻 Preventing & Identifying Cyberbullying and Digital Harm

Creating safe spaces also means protecting one another online. In today’s digital world, young people spend a lot of time on social media, messaging apps, gaming platforms, and other online spaces — but not every online experience is safe.

Cyberbullying can include:
🔹 Hurtful or threatening messages
🔹 Sharing embarrassing photos or information
🔹 Fake accounts and online harassment
🔹 Excluding others online
🔹 Spreading rumours or hate speech

Digital harm can affect mental health, confidence, relationships, and personal safety. That is why it is important for every Scout to learn how to recognise harmful behaviour and take action responsibly.

✅ Think before you post
✅ Respect others online
✅ Protect personal information
✅ Speak up when someone is being harmed
✅ Use blocking and reporting tools
✅ Support friends who may be experiencing cyberbullying

Remember:
“Behind every screen is a real person with real feelings.”

Let us work together to build positive, respectful, and safe digital communities where every young person feels valued, heard, and protected. 🌍🤝

SAFE FROM HARM WEEK
11–17 MAY 2026

DAY 4: CREATING SAFE SPACES FOR YOUTH DIALOGUE

“Dialogue is not about winning an argument — it is about understanding one another.”

Young people thrive in spaces where they feel safe, respected, heard, and valued. Creating safe spaces for dialogue allows youth to share ideas, express feelings, ask questions, and learn from different perspectives without fear of judgment, discrimination, or harm.

Healthy dialogue builds trust, strengthens relationships, promotes empathy, and encourages peaceful problem-solving — even when conversations become difficult or uncomfortable.

10 PRINCIPLES OF DIALOGUE

1. To help establish a safe space.
2. To understand that dialogue is about learning.
3. To encourage the use of appropriate communication skills.
4. To set proper ground rules.
5. To prevent quitting or avoiding difficult issues.
6. To set the expectation that dialogue can transform us with new perspectives and ideas.
7. To gradually address difficult questions.
8. To prevent quitting or avoiding difficult issues.
9. To set the expectation that dialogue can transform us with new perspectives and ideas.
10. To encourage young people to share what they learn.

Today, let us commit to building spaces where every young person feels safe to speak, confident to listen, and empowered to grow.
